OATEY 74177 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 74177 cleanout work on a 3 inch line or does it need 4 inch?
Both. The Oatey 74177 general purpose cleanout is built for 3 inch or 4 inch PVC DWV pipe, so the same part covers the two sizes you will see on most residential and light commercial drain lines.
2) Can I use the Oatey 74177 on cast iron or ABS drain pipe?
No. The 74177 body is PVC and is made to solvent weld to 3 inch or 4 inch PVC DWV pipe. For cast iron you need a cleanout made for that system, and ABS needs an ABS body or a proper transition coupling at the connection.
3) What comes in the box with the Oatey 74177 cleanout?
You get the PVC cleanout body, a 6 inch NI cover, and a square ring. That is the complete assembly for the floor opening, so the only thing you supply is the PVC pipe and solvent cement to tie it into the drain.
4) Is this an Oatey cleanout I can set in a concrete floor pour?
Yes, the 74177 is a general purpose floor cleanout with a square ring, which is the piece that sets flush with the finished floor and lets you adjust the cover to grade as the slab or topping goes in. The 6 inch round cover sits in that ring once the floor is finished.
5) What is the Oatey part number I should order for a 6 inch cover general purpose cleanout?
Order Oatey 74177. That number covers the 3 inch or 4 inch PVC general purpose cleanout supplied with the 6 inch NI cover and square ring as one assembly.
6) How heavy is the Oatey 74177 cleanout assembly?
It runs about 4 pounds complete, the PVC body plus the 6 inch cover and ring. Light enough for one person to set, and the weight is mostly in the metal cover rather than the plastic body.
