OATEY 72298 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Oatey 72298 general purpose drain connect to?
The Oatey 72298 is a 4 inch PVC pipe-fit drain, so it mates to 4 inch PVC DWV pipe. Pipe-fit means the drain body slips over the pipe rather than requiring a caulked or threaded connection, so you need a 4 inch PVC stub to land it on.
2) Will the Oatey 72298 work on a cast iron or ABS drain line?
No. The 72298 body is PVC and is built as a pipe fit to 4 inch PVC. For a cast iron line you need a drain with a no-caulk or caulk connection sized to that hub, and ABS lines need an ABS body or a listed transition coupling ahead of the drain.
3) Is a square grate drain like the Oatey 72298 better than a round one for a tiled floor?
A square top lines up with tile and paver joints, so you cut straight edges instead of coping a curve. Round grates are easier where the finished surface is poured concrete or sheet goods. The 72298 is the square-top version with a 6 inch cast nickel grate.
4) What is the Oatey part number I should order for the 4 inch PVC drain with the 6 inch square cast grate?
Order Oatey 72298. That is the manufacturer part number for the 4 inch PVC general purpose pipe-fit drain with the 6 inch cast nickel square-top grate.
5) How heavy is the Oatey 72298 drain?
The assembly weighs 5.8 pounds, most of that in the cast nickel bronze grate. That matters if you are setting several in a slab pour and need to know what the forms are carrying, and it tells you this is a metal-topped drain rather than an all-plastic one.
6) Where is the Oatey 72298 drain actually used?
It is a general purpose floor drain, meant for utility areas, mechanical rooms, laundry rooms, and similar floors draining into a 4 inch PVC line. The cast nickel bronze grate holds up to foot traffic and cleaning in those spaces better than a plastic strainer.
