OATEY 72257 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 72257 drain connect to 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe?
Both. The Oatey 72257 is a pipe fit drain body that takes either 3 inch or 4 inch PVC, so one part covers the two common general purpose drain line sizes. Because it is pipe fit PVC, it solvent welds to the line rather than threading, so plan the rough-in height before you cement it.
2) What size grate comes on the Oatey 72257 general purpose drain?
It ships with a 6 inch cast grate and a square top, so the finished opening you cut or form for is sized around that square top rather than around the 3 or 4 inch pipe below it. The cast grate is the heavier option for areas that see foot traffic or rolling loads compared with a plastic strainer.
3) Do I need a square opening for the Oatey 72257, or will it work in a round cutout?
The top on the 72257 is square, so the finished floor opening needs to be squared off around it. If your existing drain sits in a round cutout with a round strainer, a square top drain will leave gaps at the corners unless you patch and reform the opening.
4) Is the 72257 drain heavy enough to set in a floor that gets traffic?
The unit weighs 5.8 pounds, which reflects the cast grate rather than an all plastic strainer. The PVC body keeps it corrosion resistant for general purpose floor drainage while the cast top carries the load at the surface.
5) What part number do I give my supplier for the Oatey PVC drain with the 6 inch cast grate?
Order it as Oatey 72257. That is the general purpose pipe fit drain in PVC with the 6 inch cast grate and square top, sized for 3 inch or 4 inch pipe.
