OATEY 72277 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Oatey 72277 drain fit 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe?
Both. The 72277 is a pipe-fit body that takes either 3 inch or 4 inch PVC, so you don't have to change drain models when the riser size changes between rough-ins. It solvent welds to the pipe rather than threading or clamping.
2) What size is the grate on the Oatey 72277 general purpose drain?
It carries a 5 inch cast nickel bronze grate with a square top. Plan your tile or slab cut around the 5 inch square strainer face, not around the 3 or 4 inch pipe below it.
3) Is a cast nickel bronze grate a better choice than plastic for a general purpose floor drain?
For traffic areas it is. The 72277 pairs a PVC body, which keeps cost and weight down and solvent welds straight to the drain line, with a cast metal strainer that takes foot and cart traffic and cleaning chemicals better than a molded plastic top. If the drain is in a concealed or light-duty spot, a full plastic-top drain is the simpler buy.
4) Where is the Oatey 72277 drain typically used?
It is a general purpose floor drain, so mechanical rooms, laundry areas, utility and janitor rooms, and similar spots where you need a point drain tied into a 3 or 4 inch PVC line. It is not a shower-specific drain with a membrane clamping ring.
5) Do I need a separate trap with the Oatey 72277 drain?
Yes. The 72277 is a drain body and grate that solvent welds onto 3 or 4 inch PVC; the trap is a separate fitting in the line below it. Order the P-trap to match the pipe size you are running.
6) How heavy is the Oatey 72277 floor drain for shipping and handling?
About 4 pounds, with a shipping volume of 0.149. Light enough to carry a case of them to the rough-in, and most of that weight is the cast grate rather than the PVC body.
