OATEY 72218 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Oatey 72218 drain connect to 4 inch PVC pipe?
Yes. The 72218 is a 4 inch PVC general purpose drain with a pipe fit connection, so it mates to 4 inch PVC DWV pipe. Because the body is PVC, the joint is solvent welded with PVC cement, not threaded or gasketed.
2) Is the 72218 a floor drain or a shower drain?
It is a general purpose floor drain. There is no clamping ring or membrane flange called out, so it is not the part for a shower pan or a waterproofed membrane floor. For a tiled shower you want a drain with a membrane clamp; for a utility or mechanical room floor on 4 inch PVC, the 72218 is the right type.
3) Is the grate on the Oatey 72218 metal or plastic?
The grate is cast nickel bronze with a square top, set in a PVC body. That gives you a metal walking surface over a plastic drain body, which is why this one gets used in finished areas rather than a plastic-grate utility drain.
4) What is the exact Oatey part number to order for the 4 inch PVC drain with the square nickel grate?
Order Oatey 72218. That single model number covers the 4 inch PVC body, the 4 inch cast nickel grate and the square top as one assembly, so there is no separate grate or strainer to specify.
5) Will a square nickel bronze grate line up with square tile?
Yes, that is the main reason to pick the 72218 over a round grate. The square top follows tile and grout lines, so it sets cleanly into a tiled or patterned floor without cutting curves around a round strainer.
6) How heavy is the Oatey 72218 drain?
It ships at 2.95 lb with a shipping volume of 0.22 cu ft, so it is a one hand set for the plumber. Most of that weight is the cast nickel grate rather than the PVC body.
