OATEY 30916 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use Oatey 30916 ABS cement on PVC drain pipe?
No. Oatey 30916 is an ABS-only solvent cement, formulated to weld ABS pipe and fittings. Joining PVC, or making an ABS-to-PVC transition, calls for the correct PVC cement or an ABS-to-PVC transition cement instead. Using black ABS cement on PVC will not produce a code-acceptable joint.
2) What size ABS pipe will this Oatey black cement handle?
It covers all schedules and classes of ABS pipe and fittings up to 6 inch diameter with an interference fit. Above 6 inch you are outside what this medium body cement is rated for.
3) Is this ABS cement approved for pressure lines or only DWV?
Non-pressure only. Oatey's Extra Special medium body black cement is intended for DWV work, drain, waste and vent, and the formulation is specified for all non-pressure applications in hot and arid climates. Do not use it on pressure piping.
4) What temperature range can I apply Oatey 30916 in?
Recommended application temperature is 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 43 C). That upper end is why the Extra Special formula exists, it stays workable in hot, arid conditions. Below 40 F, switch to a cement rated for cold weather application.
5) Does this Oatey cement meet low-VOC rules for California jobs?
Yes. It is a low VOC solvent cement meeting SCAQMD Rule 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, so it is usable on jobs in the South Coast and Bay Area air districts.
6) What standards and certifications does Oatey 30916 carry for spec work?
It meets ASTM D2235 for ABS solvent cement and complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements. Oatey's solvent cement and primer products are also certified to UL Greenguard Gold, which matters on schools, healthcare and LEED-tracked projects.
7) Does ABS cement need a primer first?
No separate primer step with this product. Oatey 30916 is a one-step black ABS solvent cement, and a dauber comes in the can. Clean and dry the pipe end and socket, then apply. Primer is a PVC and CPVC requirement, not an ABS one.
8) Will medium body ABS cement fill a sloppy fitting?
Medium viscosity is the point of it. The medium body fills gaps in loose or out-of-round joints and gives you more working time before set, which helps on larger diameters and on hot days when a thin regular body cement skins over fast.
9) Why is ABS cement black instead of clear?
The black pigment matches ABS pipe and makes the joint visibly inspectable, an inspector can see the cement bead around the hub. It is also a quick field check that you grabbed ABS cement and not a clear or purple PVC product.
