1) Can Oatey 30917 ABS cement be used on PVC or CPVC pipe?
No. Oatey 30917 is an ABS-only solvent cement, formulated to weld ABS pipe and fittings. For PVC or CPVC you need a cement rated for that material, or an ABS-to-PVC transition cement if you are joining the two. Using the black ABS cement on PVC will not produce a code-compliant joint.
2) Is this ABS cement approved for pressure lines?
No. The 30917 medium body black cement is for non-pressure applications only, such as DWV drain, waste and vent work. Pressure piping needs a cement specifically rated for pressure service.

5) Do I need a primer before using Oatey ABS black cement?
ABS solvent welding with this cement does not call for a separate primer the way PVC does; the cement itself softens the ABS surface. Clean and dry the pipe and fitting, then apply with the dauber packed in the can.
6) Why choose a medium body ABS cement instead of a regular body?
Medium viscosity fills gaps more easily and gives you more working time before the joint sets. That matters on larger diameters, on sloppy or slightly out-of-round fittings, and when you are dry-fitting a run of DWV and need a few extra seconds to seat and quarter-turn the joint. A thin regular body cement sets faster and is better suited to small diameter tight-fit work.
