OATEY 31093 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Oatey 31093 gray PVC cement be used on potable water lines, or is it DWV only?
Oatey 31093 heavy duty gray PVC cement is rated for DWV, pressure pipe, potable water and electrical applications. It complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is the standard that governs materials in contact with drinking water, so it is not restricted to drain, waste and vent work.
2) What pipe sizes will the Oatey 31093 gray cement handle?
It works on all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings with an interference fit, up to 12 inch diameter on pressure pipe and up to 18 inch on non-pressure pipe. That covers most commercial DWV risers and mains as well as typical pressure lines.
3) Can I use this PVC cement on a cold day, and how cold is too cold?
The recommended application window for the 31093 gray cement is 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 43 C). Below 40 F the solvent behaves differently and you are outside the manufacturer's recommendation, so on winter jobs either warm the work area or switch to an all-weather formula rated lower.
4) Will this Oatey cement pass a low-VOC jurisdiction like California SCAQMD?
Yes. The 31093 is a low VOC solvent cement meeting California South Coast Air Quality Management District 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, and it meets ASTM D2564, the standard spec for PVC solvent cements that most plumbing codes reference. It is also certified to UL Greenguard Gold.
5) Does this cement work on CPVC or ABS pipe too?
No. This is a PVC solvent cement and it is formulated for PVC pipe and fittings only. CPVC needs a CPVC-specific cement, ABS needs ABS cement, and a PVC-to-ABS transition needs a dedicated transition cement. Using PVC cement on the wrong resin gives you a joint that will not hold.
6) Is gray heavy duty cement different from regular PVC cement, and when do I need it?
The gray heavy duty formula is thicker than a regular-body clear cement. That extra body fills gaps in loose or out-of-round joints, which is why it is the usual pick on larger diameter pipe and on fittings where the interference fit is marginal. On small residential DWV with tight fits, a regular body cement is easier to work with. Gray also reads clearly on an inspection, since the joint is visible.
7) Do I have to use primer with Oatey 31093 gray cement?
The 31093 is a cement, not a primer, and it does not replace one. Most plumbing codes require a purple primer on PVC pressure and potable joints, and inspectors look for the purple witness mark. Order primer separately alongside the cement for any inspected pressure or potable work.
8) How much does a 4 oz can of this Oatey cement weigh for shipping or a stocking list?
The 4 oz can of gray PVC cement lists a product weight of 0.35 lb and a volume of 0.012. Small enough that MRO buyers usually stock several cans on the truck rather than a single large container, since opened cement thickens once the can is broken into.
