OATEY 72128 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Oatey 72128 as a shower drain?
It is sold as a general purpose drain, not a shower pan drain. A shower needs a drain with a clamping ring and weep holes to tie into the pan liner or membrane; the 72128 pipe base drain has no pan-clamping provision. Use it for utility room floors, mechanical rooms, basement floor drains and similar general drainage tied to 4 inch PVC.
2) Does the Oatey 72128 drain come with a trap?
No trap is included. The 72128 is the drain body and grate only, with a 4 inch PVC hub to glue onto your pipe. You still need a P-trap below it, plus a trap primer connection if your code requires one for an infrequently used floor drain.
3) Is the grate on the Oatey 72128 metal or plastic?
Brass. The 72128 pairs a PVC pipe base with a 6 inch brass grate, so the walking surface is metal while the body stays plastic for solvent welding. Brass is the usual pick where a plastic grate would not take foot traffic or where the owner wants a metal finish at the floor.
4) How much does the Oatey 72128 drain weigh for shipping?
Listed product weight is 4 pounds, which is consistent with a PVC body carrying a 6 inch cast brass grate. Easy one-hand carry on the job, no special handling.
