OATEY 72028 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Oatey 72028 drain with copper or cast iron drain pipe?
No. The 72028 base is PVC with a PVC connection, which means solvent weld to PVC pipe only. For copper or cast iron you need a drain with a matching connection, or a transition coupling ahead of the drain body. Gluing PVC to metal pipe is not a connection method this drain supports.
2) How big is the grate on the Oatey 72028 drain?
It ships with a 5 inch round brass grate sitting on a 4 inch PVC body. The extra inch of grate diameter gives you a lip that covers the edge of the pipe and the surrounding finish material, which is why this one gets used for utility room and general purpose floor drainage rather than a tight tile cut.
3) What part number do I order for the Oatey 4 inch PVC drain with the brass grate?
Oatey 72028. That is the manufacturer part number and the only model in this configuration: 4 inch PVC pipe base, 5 inch brass grate. Give that number to a supplier and you will get the matching drain and grate together.
4) What does the Oatey 72028 drain weigh for a shipment or material list?
0.302 lb per drain, with a listed volume of 0.015. It is a light assembly, which is what you would expect from a PVC body with a brass grate, and it makes bulk ordering for a multi-unit job easy to palletize.
