OATEY 72038 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Oatey 72038 a shower drain or a floor drain?
It is a general purpose drain, not a shower pan drain. General purpose bodies like this are used where the drain sits in a poured floor, mechanical room, or utility area and there is no membrane to clamp. If you are setting a tile shower or a hot mop pan, you want a clamping ring shower drain instead, because this one has no membrane clamp.
2) Can I use the Oatey 72038 with ABS or cast iron pipe?
No. The base is PVC and is made to be solvent welded to PVC. ABS takes a different cement and cast iron takes a caulked or no-hub connection, so for those systems use the drain built for that material rather than transitioning at the drain body.
3) What part number do I order for the Oatey 4 inch PVC general purpose drain with brass grate?
Order Oatey 72038. That is the single model, the 4 inch PVC pipe base drain with the 5 inch brass grate and round ring, so there is no finish or size option to specify on the order.
4) Is the grate on the 72038 Oatey drain metal or plastic?
The grate is brass, set in a round ring. Brass takes foot traffic and cleaning better than a plastic strainer and gives a finished look in exposed floors, which is why it is specified in commercial and multi-family utility areas.
5) How much does the Oatey 72038 drain weigh for takeoff purposes?
Product weight is 0.342, with a listed volume of 0.021. It is a light assembly, since only the grate and ring are brass and the body is PVC.
