OATEY 72138 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Oatey 72138 a shower drain or a general purpose floor drain?
It is a general purpose drain, not a shower pan drain. There is no clamping ring or weep system for a shower membrane here, so it suits utility room floors, mechanical rooms, and similar drainage where the pipe is simply stubbed up and the grate sits at finished floor. For a tiled shower you want a membrane clamp drain instead.
2) What size is the grate on the Oatey 72138 drain, and what is it made of?
It comes with a 6 inch round brass grate and a round ring. The brass finish holds up better underfoot than a plastic strainer and gives a 6 inch visible face over a 4 inch pipe, so plan your tile or slab opening around the 6 inch grate, not the 4 inch base.
3) Does the Oatey 72138 drain come with the grate and ring, or do I order those separately?
Both are included. The 72138 ships as a complete assembly: the 4 inch PVC pipe base, the 6 inch brass grate, and the round ring. The only extras you supply are PVC primer and cement for the pipe joint.
4) Is there a trap built into the Oatey 72138 drain?
No. The 72138 is a drain body with a PVC pipe base only, so the trap has to be in the line below it. On a floor drain that means a P-trap in the rough-in, and if the floor sees little use you should plan for a trap primer or periodic water to keep the seal from drying out.
5) How much does the Oatey 72138 drain weigh for a parts order?
3.52 lb for the complete drain with its brass grate. Most of that is the grate and ring; the PVC body is light. Useful if you are stocking a quantity for a multi-unit rough-in.
