OATEY 72198 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe size does the Oatey 72198 general purpose drain connect to?
The Oatey 72198 has a 4 inch PVC pipe base, so it solvent-welds onto 4 inch PVC drain pipe. The product size range given for the drain is 3in-4in, which covers fitting into a 3 or 4 inch rough-in run depending on how you adapt it, but the base itself is 4 inch PVC.
2) Can I use the Oatey 72198 PVC drain on a cast iron or ABS line?
No. The 72198 is a PVC pipe base drain, so it is made to solvent-weld to PVC. Joining it to cast iron or ABS means a transition coupling or a shielded no-hub coupling at the pipe, not a direct cement joint. For an ABS system, look for the same drain in an ABS pipe base version.
3) Is the grate on the Oatey 72198 metal or plastic?
The grate is chrome, 6 inches across, and it sits in a round ring. The drain body under it is PVC. So you get a metal finished surface where feet and carts hit it, with a plastic body that solvent-welds to the pipe.
4) What is the part number to order the Oatey 4 inch PVC drain with the 6 inch chrome grate?
Order Oatey 72198. That part number covers the complete assembly: PVC pipe base drain body, 6 inch chrome grate, and the round ring.
5) Does the Oatey 72198 come with the grate, or do I buy that separately?
The grate is included. The 72198 ships as the PVC pipe base drain with the 6 inch chrome grate and round ring together, so you are not ordering a strainer on top of it. What you still need on the job is the PVC primer and cement for the pipe joint.
6) What is the Oatey 72198 drain actually used for?
It is a general purpose floor drain, used where you need a point drain tied into a 4 inch PVC waste line, with a 6 inch chrome grate as the walking surface. Typical jobs are utility rooms, laundry areas, and mechanical spaces where a plain round drain with a cleanable metal grate is all the opening requires.
