OATEY 72199 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the 72199 as a shower drain?
It is a general purpose floor drain with a 4 inch PVC hub base, not a shower drain. Shower installations need a drain with a clamping ring and weep holes to bond to the pan membrane. Use the 72199 where you want an open floor drain in a laundry room, utility space, mechanical room or garage over a 4 inch PVC line.
2) How big is the grate on the Oatey 72199 drain?
It comes with a 6 inch round grate, and the round ring is included with it. That 6 inch face is what sets the finished opening you need in the floor, so size the tile or concrete cut-out around the grate, not around the 4 inch hub below it.
3) Is the strainer on this Oatey floor drain metal or plastic?
The grate is chrome, on a PVC body. So the walking surface is metal while the hub and base that get cemented into the drain line are plastic. That pairing is typical for utility rooms, laundry areas and light commercial back-of-house floors where a plastic grate would scuff or discolor.
4) I need to replace a floor drain in a slab. What number do I order from Oatey?
Order Oatey part 72199 for the 4 inch PVC hub version with the 6 inch chrome grate. It is sold as a single configuration, so there is no finish or size to specify when ordering, but confirm your existing outlet is 4 inch PVC hub before you pull the old body.
