OATEY 72197 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 72197 general purpose drain connect to 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe?
Both. The Oatey 72197 drain base accepts 3 inch or 4 inch PVC, so one part covers either line size. The connection is a PVC solvent-weld type, so you're cementing it to PVC DWV pipe, not threading or gasketing it.
2) Can I use the Oatey 72197 drain on a cast iron or ABS line?
No. Both the body and the connection on the 72197 are PVC, which means it is meant to be solvent welded into PVC pipe. For cast iron you'd need a drain with a caulk or no-hub connection, and ABS needs an ABS-bodied drain or a listed transition coupling ahead of the drain.
3) How big is the grate on the Oatey 72197 drain, and what finish is it?
It's a 6 inch round grate in chrome, held by a round ring. The 6 inch face gives you a visible finished opening wider than the 3 or 4 inch pipe below it, so plan your tile or slab cut-out around the 6 inch grate rather than the pipe size.
4) Is this a floor drain I can use in a utility room or mechanical space rather than a shower?
The 72197 is a general purpose drain, intended for floor drainage in spaces like laundry, utility, and mechanical rooms where you need an open drain with a removable grate. It is not sold as a shower pan drain assembly with a membrane clamp, so for a tiled shower you want a dedicated shower drain with a clamping ring.
5) Does the Oatey 72197 include a trap?
No trap comes with it. The 72197 is the drain body, 6 inch chrome grate, and round ring only. You still need to trap the line below with a P-trap or trap fitting in PVC, and on a general purpose floor drain in an infrequently used space a trap primer or seal is worth specifying so the trap doesn't dry out.
6) We're standardizing floor drains across an apartment portfolio. Does one Oatey 72197 cover both 3 inch and 4 inch stub-outs?
Yes, which is the main reason to stock it. Because the base takes either 3 inch or 4 inch PVC, you can carry a single part number (72197) for units plumbed either way and still have the same chrome 6 inch grate showing in every room. That cuts the SKU count for a maintenance crew ordering for mixed-vintage buildings.
7) How heavy is the Oatey 72197 drain, and does the grate hold up to foot traffic?
The assembly weighs about 4 pounds, with a PVC body and a chrome grate. That's a light-duty to medium-duty floor drain suited to foot traffic in utility and residential spaces. For loading dock, garage, or wheeled-cart traffic, step up to a cast iron drain with a heavy-duty rated grate.
