OATEY 72187 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 72187 drain connect to 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe?
Both. The Oatey 72187 general purpose drain is built to take either a 3 inch or a 4 inch PVC connection, so you can spec one part whether the branch line under the slab is 3 or 4 inch. It solvent welds to PVC DWV pipe, so keep the piping in PVC rather than ABS or cast iron at the connection.
2) Is the Oatey 72187 a general purpose floor drain or a shower drain?
It is a general purpose drain, not a tiled shower pan drain. There is no clamping ring and weep system for a hot mop or membrane pan here, so for a tiled shower you want a dedicated shower drain with a clamping collar. Use the 72187 for utility rooms, mechanical spaces, laundry areas and similar floor drainage where the pipe is 3 or 4 inch PVC.
3) What size is the grate on the Oatey 72187 floor drain?
It comes with a 6 inch round chrome grate. That is the visible finished size at the floor, so lay out your tile or slab pour around a 6 inch opening even though the pipe connection below is 3 or 4 inch.
4) Is the Oatey 72187 grate metal or plastic?
The grate is chrome plated, while the drain body itself is PVC. That combination gives you a metal walking surface at the floor with a plastic body that solvent welds straight to PVC drain line.
5) What does the Oatey 72187 drain weigh for freight and material takeoff?
About 4 pounds each, with a shipping volume of 0.147. Light enough that a case of them is no issue on a service van, and useful when you are pricing out a multi-unit rough-in.
