OATEY 72188 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Oatey 72188 general purpose drain connect to?
The Oatey 72188 is a 4 inch drain body, so it fits 4 inch PVC DWV pipe. It is a pipe fit style body, meaning the pipe seats into the drain body rather than threading in. The grate measures 6 inches across, so the finished opening in the floor is wider than the 4 inch pipe it drops onto.
2) Can I use the Oatey 72188 as a shower drain?
It is a general purpose floor drain, not a shower drain. Shower drains need a clamping ring and weep holes to seal to a pan liner or membrane; the 72188 is a pipe fit body with a 6 inch chrome grate intended for general floor drainage. For a tiled shower on a mortar bed, use a drain built for membrane clamping instead.
3) What is the grate on the Oatey 72188 made of, and will it hold up in a commercial area?
The strainer is chrome, 6 inches in diameter. Chrome gives you a finished look that matches chrome fixtures and trim in restrooms, laundry rooms and utility areas. Note the body itself is PVC, so this is a general purpose drain rather than a heavy traffic or vehicle load product.
4) What part number do I order for the Oatey 4 inch PVC drain with the 6 inch chrome grate?
Order Oatey 72188. That is the manufacturer part number, and it is a single configuration: 4 inch PVC pipe fit body with a 6 inch chrome grate. There are no finish or size options to specify.
