OATEY 72268 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 72268 drain connect to 4 inch PVC DWV pipe?
Yes. The Oatey 72268 is a pipe-fit drain with a 4 inch PVC body, so the outlet takes 4 inch PVC pipe and is solvent welded in place. It is not a no-hub or threaded connection, so plan on a PVC cement joint at the riser.
2) Is the 72268 a shower drain or a floor drain?
It is a general purpose floor drain, not a shower pan drain. There is no clamping ring or pan collar for a membrane, so it belongs in a slab or utility floor application where the 4 inch PVC outlet is piped directly into the DWV line.
3) What size is the grate on the Oatey 72268 general purpose drain?
The grate is 6 inches, cast and chrome plated, over a square top drain body. The cast chrome grate takes foot traffic better than a stamped strainer, which is why it gets specified for utility rooms, basements and mechanical spaces rather than finished shower work.
4) Does the Oatey 72268 include a trap?
No trap is part of the drain. The 72268 is the drain body, square top and 6 inch cast chrome grate only, so a P-trap has to be provided separately below the 4 inch PVC outlet.
5) Will a square grate drain work if my existing floor drain opening is round?
The 72268 has a square top with a 6 inch cast chrome grate, so it will not drop cleanly into a round cored opening of the same size. For a straight swap you want a round top general purpose drain with the same 4 inch PVC pipe fit outlet; keep the square top where you are setting new pipe or can patch the slab around it.
6) What is the Oatey part number and how heavy is this drain?
Order it as Oatey 72268. It weighs 2.66 lb, which is consistent with a PVC body carrying a cast metal grate rather than a full cast iron drain.
