OATEY 72388 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Where can I use a general purpose pipe fit drain like the Oatey 72388?
General purpose describes an area drain rather than a shower drain: equipment rooms, utility and laundry areas, janitor spaces, walk-in coolers, anywhere a floor needs to drain into 4 inch PVC waste. The 10 inch chrome grate gives a wide inlet for washdown flow. It is not sold as a clamping-ring shower drain, so for a tiled or membrane shower pan you want a membrane-clamp drain instead.
2) How big is the grate on the Oatey 72388 drain?
It comes with a 10 inch cast grate in chrome with a round top. That's a noticeably larger visible surface than the 4 inch pipe connection, so plan your finished floor opening and tile layout around the 10 inch round, not the 4 inch base.
3) Is the Oatey 72388 drain body metal or plastic?
The drain body is PVC. Only the grate is cast metal with a chrome finish. For a maintenance buyer that means no corrosion at the body and a cemented joint rather than caulked lead or threaded iron, but it also means the body should not be used where a metal drain is specified on the drawing.
