OATEY 72039 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How does the Oatey 72039 drain connect to the drain line, and what pipe size does it take?
The 72039 has a PVC hub base sized for 4 inch pipe, so the outlet end is solvent welded over 4 inch PVC DWV pipe. There is no threaded or no-caulk connection on the base, so plan on a PVC cement joint at rough-in.
2) Does the Oatey 72039 drain come with a trap?
No trap is part of this assembly. The 72039 is a drain body with a 5 inch brass grate and round ring on a 4 inch PVC hub base, so you trap it separately below the floor and vent it per code.
3) Can I use the Oatey 72039 as a shower drain?
It is built as a general purpose drain, not a tiled shower drain. There is no clamping ring or membrane flange in the assembly, so for a mortar bed or a pan liner you want a purpose made shower drain with a clamping collar instead. The 72039 suits utility and area drainage where you are draining a floor, not sealing a waterproof membrane.
4) What size is the grate on the Oatey 72039 general purpose drain?
The grate is 5 inches, in brass, and it sits in a round ring. That 5 inch round face is what you are working to when you lay out tile or finish the slab around it.
5) Is the strainer on the Oatey 72039 plastic or metal?
Brass, not plastic. That matters in a mop room, mechanical room, or any spot that sees carts, foot traffic, or hot water, where a plastic grate can distort or crack. The body itself is PVC.
6) Is the Oatey 72039 grate removable for cleaning the drain line?
Yes. The 5 inch brass grate sits in a round ring and lifts out, which gives you access down into the 4 inch PVC body to snake or flush the line. That is the usual maintenance path on this style of drain.
