OATEY 72149 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 72149 drain connect to 4 inch PVC DWV pipe?
Yes. The 72149 general purpose drain has a 4 inch PVC hub base, so a 4 inch PVC DWV pipe slips into the hub and is solvent welded. The base material and connection type are both PVC, so use standard PVC primer and cement. It will not work on cast iron or ABS lines without an appropriate transition.
2) Is the Oatey 72149 a general purpose floor drain or a shower drain?
It is a general purpose drain, not a shower pan drain. There is no clamping ring or weep-hole flange for a membrane, so use it for utility rooms, mechanical rooms, laundry areas and similar floors draining to a 4 inch PVC line. For a tiled shower on a waterproof membrane you want a dedicated shower drain with a clamping collar instead.
3) What size grate comes on the Oatey 72149 drain?
It ships with a 6 inch round brass grate plus a square ring, so you get both the strainer and the trim ring in one part. The brass finish means you don't have to order a separate grate for a finished floor area.
4) Is the Oatey 72149 drain body metal or plastic?
The drain body is PVC; only the 6 inch grate is brass. That combination is common for general purpose floor drains, the plastic body solvent welds straight to the PVC waste line while the metal grate takes foot traffic. If your spec calls for an all cast iron or all brass drain body, this is not the right part.
5) How heavy is the Oatey 72149 drain, and does it need a trap?
The assembly weighs 4 pounds. Like any floor drain it needs a trap on the waste side; the 72149 is a drain body with hub base only, so a P-trap or trap primer connection is a separate item on your material list.
