1) Does the Oatey 72079 drain connect to 4 inch PVC DWV pipe?
Yes. The 72079 has a 4 inch PVC hub base, so the pipe slips into the hub and is solvent welded with PVC cement. It is a PVC-to-PVC connection only, so if the drain line below is cast iron or ABS you need a different base or a transition coupling ahead of the drain.
2) Is this an Oatey floor drain for general area drainage or a shower drain?
It is a general purpose floor drain. That means it is intended for floor areas that need to shed water, such as mechanical rooms, laundry areas, utility spaces and janitor closets, rather than a shower pan assembly with a clamping membrane ring. If you are draining a tiled shower over a waterproof liner, you want a shower drain with a clamping ring and weep holes instead.
3) Does the Oatey 72079 include a trap, or do I need to add one?
No trap is part of the drain. The 72079 is a hub base body with grate and ring only, so a P-trap has to be installed in the 4 inch PVC line below it, and the trap needs a means of keeping its seal if the floor drain is rarely used. Plan the trap, the trap primer connection if your code requires one, and any required vent as separate items.
4) What size opening does the 5 inch grate on the Oatey 72079 cover?
The grate is 5 inches across, which is the finished visible surface once the drain is set. Rough the opening for the 4 inch hub body and the 5 inch round grate laps over it. Plan your tile or slab cut around the grate diameter, not the pipe size.
5) What does the square ring on the Oatey 72079 do?
The square ring seats around the drain body at the floor surface and gives the pour or tile work a defined square edge to finish against, with the round 5 inch grate sitting inside it. It is supplied with the drain, so you are not sourcing a separate trim ring.
