1) Does the Oatey 88036 come with the dome strainer, or do I order that separately?
Both the ABS dome strainer and the dam collar ship with the 88036. Nothing else to buy for the drain itself, you just supply the 4 inch ABS leader pipe, solvent cement, and the roofing membrane flashing detail.
2) What is the dam collar on a roof drain for, and when do I actually need it?
The dam collar is a ring that sits around the drain to hold a shallow pond of water on the roof, used on controlled flow or ballasted roof designs where you want to meter runoff rather than dump it all at once. On a standard free draining roof you can leave it off. Since the 88036 ships with the ABS collar, you have the option either way without a second order.
3) Is an ABS roof drain OK, or should I be using cast iron?
The 88036 is all ABS, body, dome and collar. ABS is the normal choice for residential and light commercial membrane or built up roofs: it is non corroding, cements straight to ABS DWV pipe, and at 5.42 lb one person can set it. Cast iron is what you go to for heavy traffic roofs, areas exposed to foot or equipment abuse, or where a spec calls for a metal drain with a clamping ring and metal strainer.
4) Can I use the 88036 to replace an existing 4 inch roof drain on a reroof?
If the existing leader is 4 inch ABS, the 88036 lands on it directly, since its base is 4 inch with an ABS solvent weld connection. What you need to check on site is the deck opening and the depth available below the roof surface for the body, and whether the old drain was cast iron with a clamping ring, in which case the flashing detail changes to the ABS dome and dam collar arrangement supplied here.
5) How much does the Oatey 88036 roof drain weigh for getting it up on the roof?
