OATEY 32161 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need primer with Oatey Blue Lava PVC cement on DWV pipe?
No primer is needed on non-pressure DWV joints, where your local code permits. That is the caveat that matters: plenty of inspectors and jurisdictions still want to see purple primer on the joint regardless of what the cement is rated for, so check the code you're being inspected under before you skip it. On pressure work, primer stays in the process.
2) What size PVC pipe will Oatey 32161 Blue Lava cement handle?
Blue Lava works on all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings up to 6 inch diameter with interference fit. Above 6 inch you are outside what this cement is rated for and you want a heavy-bodied cement instead. Interference fit means the fitting grabs the pipe dry, before cement, which is normal for cut-square, properly deburred pipe.
3) Can I use PVC Blue Lava cement on ABS or CPVC pipe?
No. Blue Lava is a PVC solvent cement, formulated to weld PVC to PVC. ABS drain pipe needs an ABS cement, and CPVC needs a CPVC-specific cement rated for the higher temperatures. A PVC-to-ABS transition joint takes a dedicated transition cement, not this one. Using the wrong solvent on the wrong resin gives you a joint that looks bonded and isn't.
4) How cold can it be when I glue PVC with Oatey Blue Lava?
Recommended application temperature runs 40F to 110F (4C to 43C). Below 40F you are outside the recommendation, so on a cold morning let the cement and the pipe warm up rather than working out of a truck bed. Blue Lava is built for fast pressurization and joint strength development in all weather, which is the point of it on a repair you have to put back in service the same visit.
5) Is Oatey Blue Lava cement legal in California and other low-VOC air districts?
Yes. It is a low VOC solvent cement that meets the California South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) 1168/316A requirement, and BAAQMD Method 40. That is what lets it be sold and used on jobs in those districts. It also meets ASTM D2564, the standard PVC solvent cement spec that plan sets and inspectors reference.
6) Is Oatey solvent cement approved for indoor use in schools and healthcare buildings?
All Oatey solvent cement and primer products, Blue Lava included, are certified to UL GREENGUARD Gold. That is the low chemical emissions certification institutional specs and green building programs ask for on interior work in schools and healthcare settings. Ventilate the space while you're working regardless.
7) Why is Oatey Blue Lava cement blue instead of clear?
The blue color is a visual check. On a wet joint you can see at a glance that cement actually made it onto the pipe end and around the socket, and an inspector can see it too. Clear cement leaves nothing to look at. The tradeoff is that blue shows on exposed pipe, so on finished or visible runs where appearance matters, a clear PVC cement is the better pick.
8) How much does an 8 oz can of Oatey 32161 weigh for shipping?
The 8 oz can of Blue Lava is listed at 0.64 lb, with a volume of 0.019. Worth knowing if you're ordering a case for a truck stock or working out how many go into a service van kit.
