OATEY 1524 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Oatey 1524 clear PVC cement be used on potable water lines, or is it DWV only?
Oatey 1524 heavy duty clear PVC cement is recommended for potable water, pressure pipe, conduit and DWV, so it is not limited to drain, waste and vent work. It meets ASTM D2564, the standard spec plumbing inspectors look for on PVC solvent cement.
2) What temperature can I solvent weld PVC at with Oatey 1524?
Recommended application range for the 1524 cement is 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 43 C). Below 40 F the cure behavior falls outside what the manufacturer recommends, so cold weather work needs either heated storage and a warmed joint or a cement rated for low temperatures.
3) Will a heavy duty PVC cement work on loose fitting large diameter joints?
That is exactly what the heavy body formula is for. The 1524 is a thick formula that fills gaps in large diameter pipe and loose fitting joints, where a regular or medium body cement can run out of the bell before it welds. On small diameter tight fit joints a thinner cement is easier to work.
4) Can I use this clear cement on CPVC or ABS pipe?
No. The 1524 is formulated for PVC only. ABS needs an ABS cement, CPVC needs a CPVC cement or an all purpose transition cement, and PVC to ABS joints require a transition cement.
5) Is Oatey 1524 cement legal to use in California air quality districts?
Yes. The 1524 is a low VOC solvent cement meeting California South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40, which is what jobs in those districts require.
6) Do I still need PVC primer if I use Oatey 1524 heavy duty cement?
The 1524 is a cement, not a primer, and it does not replace one. Most codes require a primer on PVC pressure and potable water joints, so plan on a separate purple or clear PVC primer alongside the cement. The cement itself is rated to ASTM D2564, the cement standard; primers are covered separately under ASTM F656.
7) What is the maximum service temperature for pipe joined with Oatey 1524?
Maximum use temperature for the 1524 is 60 C. That covers potable cold and standard DWV service, but it rules out hot water distribution above that point, where CPVC and its matching cement are the right system.
8) Does Oatey 1524 cement dry clear so it does not show on exposed pipe?
The 1524 is a clear cement, so joints on exposed or finished PVC do not get the blue or grey smear a tinted cement leaves. Note that some jurisdictions require a primer or a colored cement so an inspector can see the joint was welded, so check what your inspector wants before using clear on a rough in.
9) How much cement is in the Oatey 1524 gallon can?
The 1524 is the gallon size, listed at 0.199 volume units with a product weight of 8.667 pounds. Gallon cans are the size for large diameter and high volume work; for service calls and small repairs a quart or pint can wastes less, since solvent cement thickens once the can has been opened and worked out of repeatedly.
10) What is the Oatey part number for the gallon of heavy duty clear PVC cement?
Order it as Oatey 1524. That is the manufacturer part number for the gallon can of heavy duty clear PVC cement.
