1) Will the Oatey 39228 Sure-Vent air admittance valve fit 2 inch vent pipe, or only 1-1/2 inch?
The 39228 ships with a 1-1/2 inch PVC Schedule 40 adapter, and the valve itself is approved to handle up to 2 inch vent pipe. So the connection you glue to is 1-1/2 inch solvent-weld PVC; if your stub-out is 2 inch, you bush it down to 1-1/2 inch to land on the adapter, and the valve is still rated for that line.
2) How many fixtures can one Oatey 39228 air admittance valve vent?
It carries a 20 DFU branch, 8 DFU stack rating. That means one valve can serve a branch line totaling up to 20 drainage fixture units, or up to 8 DFU where it is venting a stack. A typical bath group or a kitchen sink island loop sits well inside the branch number, but add up the DFU on your drawing before you commit a single valve to a multi-fixture run.
3) Can I use an air admittance valve instead of running a vent through the roof?
Not as the building's only vent. The 39228 is intended for use as a secondary vent, so the structure still needs its primary vent to atmosphere. Where it earns its place is on island sinks, remodel bathrooms, basement bars, and additions where cutting a new roof penetration is impractical. Local jurisdiction still governs, and some areas restrict AAVs regardless of the code approvals on the product.
4) Is the Oatey Sure-Vent 39228 code approved for IPC and UPC jobs?
