1) Will the Oatey 39254 Sure-Vent handle a 1-1/2 inch or 2 inch vent line?
Both. The 39254 Sure-Vent is a single size approved to handle vent pipe up to 2 inches, so it covers 1-1/2 in. through 2 in. runs. It comes with a 90 degree PVC schedule 40 adapter, so the valve sits perpendicular to the pipe it threads onto.
2) How many fixture units can an Oatey 39254 air admittance valve vent?
Up to 20 DFU on a branch or 8 DFU on a stack. That is enough for a typical island sink, a lav and tub group, or a small remodel branch, but a full bathroom group stacked above other fixtures can exceed it. Add up the fixture units on the line it serves before you commit to one valve.
3) Can a Sure-Vent air admittance valve replace the main vent through the roof?
No. The 39254 is for use as a secondary vent only. Every system still needs its primary vent open to atmosphere; the AAV just lets air in locally so a trap does not siphon. Use it under an island sink or on a branch where running a vent to the roof is impractical, not as the building's vent terminal.
4) Is the Oatey 39254 Sure-Vent code approved for IPC and UPC jurisdictions?
It is approved under both the International Plumbing Code and the Uniform Plumbing Code, and complies with ASSE Standard 1050 and 1051. Local amendments still govern where an AAV may be used, so confirm your inspector accepts them in the application before rough-in.
5) At what pressure does the Sure-Vent valve open, and will it leak sewer gas back out?
Sweet Spot technology opens the valve at -0.01 psi and seals at 0 psi and above, so it admits air the instant a draining fixture pulls a slight negative pressure and closes as soon as pressure returns to neutral or positive. That means no gas escapes under normal or positive system pressure. Each unit is functionally tested at 1/4 in. H2O and 30 in. H2O.
6) Do I need glue or a separate fitting to install the Oatey 39254?
The 90 degree PVC schedule 40 adapter is part of the assembly, so you solvent weld that adapter to your PVC vent line and the valve threads into it. No extra transition fitting is needed on a schedule 40 PVC system. The whole assembly weighs about 0.25 lb, so the branch needs no special support.
7) Why choose the 90 degree Sure-Vent over a straight one?
The 90 degree version turns the valve sideways off a vertical pipe, which is what you want in a tight cabinet or a shallow wall cavity where there is no height above the tee for a straight AAV. Function is identical: 20 DFU branch, 8 DFU stack, up to 2 in. pipe. Pick the straight body when you have vertical room and the elbow when you do not.
8) What keeps debris and insects out of an Oatey Sure-Vent AAV?
Air inlets are screened to guard the seal, and the valve ships inside a protective sleeve that keeps construction dust off the diaphragm and gives you something to grip while threading it on. Leave the sleeve in place until the rough-in dust is done.
