OATEY 39016 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 39016 Sure-Vent fit 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch PVC drain pipe?
The 39016 Sure-Vent ships with a PVC Schedule 40 adapter sized 1.5 in. to 2 in., so it solvent-welds onto either 1-1/2 inch or 2 inch Schedule 40 PVC. If your vent riser is 3 inch, the valve body itself is approved to handle up to 3 inch vent pipe, but the included adapter is the 1-1/2 to 2 inch size.
2) How many fixture units can an Oatey 39016 air admittance valve vent?
It is rated for 160 DFU on a branch or 24 DFU on a stack. That covers a typical island sink, a bath group, or a laundry branch with room to spare, but check your total drainage fixture unit count against those two numbers depending on whether you are venting a horizontal branch or a stack.
3) Can I use an air admittance valve as the only vent for the whole house?
No. The Sure-Vent 39016 is intended as a secondary vent only. Every building still needs at least one open vent through the roof to relieve positive pressure; an AAV only admits air on negative pressure and cannot exhaust. Use it for island sinks, remodels where you cannot run a vent through a wall, and additions where tying back into the main stack is impractical.
4) Is the Oatey Sure-Vent 39016 code approved for IPC and UPC jurisdictions?
It is approved under both the International Plumbing Code and the Uniform Plumbing Code, and it complies with ASSE Standard 1050 and 1051. Local amendments still govern, since some jurisdictions restrict AAV use regardless of the national code.
5) At what pressure does the Sure-Vent valve open, and will it leak sewer gas back into the room?
Sweet Spot technology opens the valve at -0.01 psi and seals at 0 psi and above, so it admits air the moment a draining fixture pulls a vacuum and shuts as soon as pressure equalizes. Each unit is 100 percent functionally tested at 1/4 inch H2O and 30 inch H2O. The air inlets are screened to guard the seal, and the protective sleeve keeps debris off the valve.
6) Does the Oatey 39016 need a separate adapter or coupling to connect it?
No extra fitting is needed for 1-1/2 or 2 inch Schedule 40 PVC. The PVC Schedule 40 adapter is part of the assembly, so you solvent-weld it straight to the riser. The valve threads into the adapter so it can be unscrewed later for service without cutting pipe. Nothing beyond PVC cement is required on the connection.
7) Can I install the Sure-Vent 39016 inside a cabinet or does it need to be in a vented space?
An AAV has to be able to draw room air, so it cannot be sealed inside an airtight enclosure. A sink base cabinet works as long as it is not sealed, and it must sit above the trap arm of the fixture it serves and above any insulation. Mount it vertical, within 15 degrees of plumb. The protective sleeve gives you a grip surface for hand tightening.
8) What color is the Oatey 39016 and how much does it weigh for a service truck stock?
White, and it weighs 0.41 lb, so it is light enough to carry several on a van without thinking about it. Volume is 0.022, useful if you are stocking a shelf bin by the case for multi-family or MRO work.
