OATEY 39019 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey Sure-Vent 39019 work on a 1-1/2 inch or 2 inch vent line?
Yes. The 39019 Sure-Vent air admittance valve is built for 1-1/2 inch to 2 inch pipe and comes with an ABS Schedule 40 adapter, so it solvent-welds straight onto ABS vent stub. One size of valve is approved to handle up to 3 inch vent pipe, so the same unit can serve a larger line with the right adapter.
2) How many fixture units can one Sure-Vent 39019 handle?
It vents up to 160 DFU on a branch or 24 DFU on a stack. That branch rating covers a typical island sink, a bar sink, or a grouped run of lavatories and a laundry box; the lower stack number is what limits you when the valve sits at the top of a vertical stack instead of on horizontal branch piping.
3) Can an air admittance valve replace the main vent through the roof?
No. The 39019 is for use as a secondary vent only. Every drainage system still needs its primary vent open to atmosphere; the Sure-Vent handles branches and fixtures that are hard to tie back, like an island sink or a remodel addition where you cannot run new pipe to the roof.
4) I have PVC vent pipe, not ABS. Is the 39019 the right Sure-Vent?
This one ships with an ABS Schedule 40 adapter, which is solvent-welded to ABS, not PVC. If your branch is PVC, order the Sure-Vent version supplied with a PVC Schedule 40 adapter instead, or thread the valve into a separately sourced PVC adapter with the correct female thread. The valve body itself is the same; the adapter material is what has to match your piping.
5) How do I install the Oatey 39019 without leaking at the threads?
The valve threads into its ABS adapter, and Oatey's instruction is to apply approved pipe joint compound or thread seal tape to the male threads of the valve before making it up. The protective sleeve around the body gives you something to grip while you turn it in, so you are not putting torque on the valve mechanism itself.
6) At what pressure does the Sure-Vent open, and will it let sewer gas back into the room?
Sweet Spot technology opens the valve at -0.01 psi and seals at 0 psi and above, so it admits air the instant a draining fixture pulls negative pressure and shuts as soon as pressure equalizes. Nothing flows out. Each unit is functionally tested at 1/4 inch H2O and 30 inch H2O before it ships.
7) Where should the Sure-Vent be mounted in relation to the fixture trap?
It has to sit above the trap arm it serves and stay in an accessible, ventilated space, since the valve needs open air to draw from. Mounted under an island sink it goes as high as the cabinet allows with a louvered or open access panel. Sealing it inside a closed wall cavity defeats it, and it cannot be substituted for the primary roof vent since the 39019 is rated for secondary venting only.
8) Will insects or debris get into the vent through an air admittance valve?
The 39019 has screening on the air inlets to guard the seal, and the protective sleeve over the body keeps construction dust and debris off the valve during and after installation. That screening is what keeps the sealing diaphragm clean so it keeps closing tight.
9) What does one Oatey 39019 Sure-Vent weigh for shipping or a parts kit?
About 0.316 lb per unit, so a case of them adds very little to a truck stock or a job cart. Useful if you are stocking several for a multi-unit remodel.
