OATEY 39018 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Oatey 39018 Sure-Vent be used on a 3 inch vent pipe, or only 1-1/2 to 2 inch?
The 39018 Sure-Vent ships with an ABS Schedule 40 adapter sized for 1-1/2 in. to 2 in. pipe, but the valve body itself is approved to handle up to 3 in. vent pipe. So on a 3 in. stack you use the same valve with the appropriate adapter rather than stepping up to a different Sure-Vent model.
2) How many fixtures will the Oatey 39018 air admittance valve vent?
It is rated for up to 160 DFU on a branch or 24 DFU on a stack. Add up the drainage fixture units on the run it is serving and stay under whichever of those two applies. Branch use is where the 160 rating buys you room, a kitchen island or a bank of lavatories in a multi-family unit sits well inside it.
3) Does the 39018 Sure-Vent replace the main vent through the roof?
No. The Sure-Vent 39018 is for use as a secondary vent only. Every building still needs at least one open vent to atmosphere, typically the main stack through the roof, to relieve positive pressure. An air admittance valve only admits air on negative pressure, it will not exhaust. Plan the job with the primary vent intact and use this to pick up islands, remodels, or additions where you cannot run pipe up through the structure.
4) Will an inspector pass an Oatey Sure-Vent 39018 on a commercial job?
The 39018 complies with ASSE Standard 1050 and 1051 and is approved under both the International Plumbing Code and the Uniform Plumbing Code. Those are the listings an inspector looks for. Local amendments can still restrict AAV use in some jurisdictions, so the code adoption in your municipality is the deciding factor, not the valve.
5) Do I need to glue the Oatey 39018 air admittance valve on, and does it thread off later?
The 39018 comes with an ABS Schedule 40 adapter, so it solvent welds to ABS DWV pipe the same way any other Sch 40 ABS fitting does. The valve carries a protective sleeve that gives you something to grip while you set it and keeps debris out of the valve during the rough-in. If you are piping in PVC, you want the PVC-adapter version of the Sure-Vent instead, an ABS adapter is not a solvent-weld match for PVC.
6) At what pressure does the Oatey Sure-Vent open, and will it leak sewer gas back into the room?
Sweet Spot technology opens the valve at -0.01 psi and seals at 0 psi and above, so it cracks open the instant a draining fixture pulls a vacuum and shuts as soon as pressure equalizes. Every unit is functionally tested at 1/4 in. H2O and 30 in. H2O. The air inlets are screened, which protects the seal and keeps insects and debris off the sealing surface.
7) Is the Oatey 39018 light enough to hang off an unsupported branch line?
At a quarter of a pound, the 39018 puts almost no load on the pipe. Normal DWV support spacing for the branch is all you need, there is no bracket or strap required specifically for the valve. Keep it upright and accessible per code, that matters more than support.
