1) Can an Oatey Sure-Vent 39238 air admittance valve replace a through-roof vent on my whole house?
No. The Sure-Vent 39238 is intended for use as a secondary vent only. Every building still needs its primary vent open to atmosphere; the AAV handles fixture or branch venting where running a vent through the roof isn't practical. Its capacity is up to 160 DFU on a branch or 24 DFU on a stack.
2) Will an air admittance valve pass inspection under IPC or UPC?
The Oatey Sure-Vent 39238 is approved under both the International Plumbing Code and the Uniform Plumbing Code, and complies with ASSE Standard 1050 and 1051. Local amendments still govern, since some jurisdictions restrict AAV use regardless of the valve's listings.
3) What is the difference between the Sure-Vent with a mechanical adapter and a plain threaded AAV?
The 39238 ships with a mechanical adapter, so it connects to the vent pipe without solvent welding the valve body. The valve itself still threads into that adapter, and you seal those male threads with joint compound or thread seal tape. A straight threaded AAV without the adapter assumes you already have a female threaded fitting in the vent line.
4) How many fixtures can the Oatey 39238 Sure-Vent handle?
Up to 160 drainage fixture units on a branch, or 24 DFU when serving a stack. That branch rating covers a lot more than a single lavatory, so one valve can vent a group of fixtures like an island sink plus adjacent fixtures on the same branch, within code limits.

Sweet Spot technology opens the valve at -0.01 psi and seals at 0 psi and above, so it only admits air when drainage creates negative pressure and closes under neutral or positive pressure. Each valve is 100 percent functionally tested at 1/4 in. H2O and 30 in. H2O before it leaves the plant.
