Orca Hardware OED8536-AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Orca OED85 rim exit device be used on a fire rated door opening?
Yes. The OED85 Series is fire rated, UL and ULC listed fire exit hardware conforming to UL 10C and UBC 7-2-1997. The description covers labeled installations up to 3 hours on metal doors and 1-1/2 hours on wood fire labeled doors. It also carries ANSI Grade 1. Note that fire exit hardware has no mechanical dogging function in use on a labeled opening even though the device is supplied with hex key dogging.
2) Will the Orca OED85 fit a wood door?
No. The OED85 is catalogued as not wood door compatible, so plan it for hollow metal or aluminum openings. If your labeled opening is a wood door, look at a fire rated rim device rated for wood, such as the Adams Rite 3700 Series narrow stile rim device, which is fire rated and listed as wood door compatible.
3) Can I use this Orca rim device on a pair of doors?
Yes, on a pair with a minimum stile of 3-1/2 inches for double door applications. Being a rim device, it latches into a strike at the frame or into a mullion, so a pair without a mullion needs a vertical rod device instead. The Orca LBR arrangement is listed for double doors including double egress on fire labeled installations.
4) Does the Orca OED85 have outside trim, or is it exit only?
As supplied it is exit only, meaning push the bar to get out and there is no outside operation. Orca lists outside trims as available for the series, so if you need key or lever entry from the pull side you order that trim separately.
5) I need a fire rated exit device for a 48 inch door instead of a 36 inch one. What should I order?
The Marks USA M9900F-48 is a 48 inch fire rated rim panic exit device in exit only function, covering the wider leaf that a 36 inch device will not. The Orca OED85 Series device is built at 36 inches and its series is rated for doors up to 36 inches by 84 inches or 48 inches by 96 inches, so for a 48 inch leaf the longer bar is the one to specify.
6) My door is a narrow stile aluminum storefront. Is the Orca OED8536 right, or do I need a different device?
The Orca OED85 Series device is a touch bar rim device requiring a minimum 3-1/2 inch stile in double door applications and uses the 161 ANSI cutout. For a true narrow stile storefront, the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch is a fire rated narrow stile rim exit device, and the Corbin Russwin ED4200 and TownSteel ED3700 are Grade 1 narrow stile rim devices without a fire rating.
7) I need the exit bar to release an electromagnetic lock or signal access control. Does the Orca OED8536 do that?
The Orca OED85 Series device is a mechanical exit only rim device with hex key dogging. For electrified duty, the SDC MSB550 Series 36 inch mechanical switch bar releases an electromagnetic lock, the SDC PSB560 Series 36 inch pressure sense bar uses tri-failsafe technology, and the SDC S6136 is a 36 inch electrified architectural rim exit device with a 4 inch wide stile. None of those three carry a fire rating.
8) What fire rated rim device is available if the door is narrower than 36 inches?
The Arrow FS1250 is a 32 inch fire rated rim exit device for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch is a fire rated narrow stile rim exit device. The Orca OED85 Series device is built at 36 inches for a standard 1-3/4 inch door thickness, so on a shorter leaf one of the shorter fire rated bars is the correct call.
9) Is the Orca OED85 handed, and do I need to specify left or right?
Non-handed. The OED85 installs on either a left or right hand door with no handing to call out on the order. That makes it easier to stock one device across a building with mixed swings.
10) What is the LBR no bottom strike feature on the Orca OED85 for?
LBR means there is no bottom strike at the floor, so nothing projects into the threshold. That keeps a clean floor line for wheelchairs, stretchers and carts rolling through, which is why it gets specified in hospitals, schools and other institutional traffic. An auxiliary spring latch (fire bolt) sits in the lower edge of the door and releases under fire conditions to hold the door closed.
11) What are the alternatives to the Orca OED85 if I need a fire rated 36 inch rim exit device from another brand?
Close equivalents we carry include the Marks USA M9900F 36 inch fire rated rim device, exit only with a panic protector end cap, and the Dexter ED1000 Series Grade 1 fire rated rim device. The Arrow FS1250 is a fire rated rim device at 32 inches for 1-3/4 inch doors. All three are non-wood-door units like the Orca. If your opening is narrow stile aluminum and labeled, the Adams Rite 3700 Series is the narrow stile fire rated option.
12) Does the 161 ANSI cutout on the Orca OED85 mean it drops into an existing prep?
The OED85 uses the 161 ANSI cutout, which is the standard cylindrical lock prep found on most commercial hollow metal doors. If your door is already prepped 161 and you are replacing a device that used that prep, the hole pattern lines up. Mounting is standard thru-bolts through the door.
13) Can I hold the Orca OED85 in a pushed position for daytime free access?
The device is supplied with hex key dogging, which mechanically holds the touch bar down so the door pushes open freely. Be aware that dogging cannot be used on a fire rated opening, and this is fire exit hardware, so on a labeled door the latch must stay active at all times.
14) Is the Orca OED85 heavy enough for a school or hospital main corridor?
It is a commercial-only device carrying ANSI Grade 1, the highest duty classification for exit hardware, and Orca lists it for institutions, schools, universities and commercial buildings. Construction is chassis mounted unit type with a stainless steel latch bolt and spring, and the touch bar operates over two thirds of the door's clear opening width.
15) If the opening is not a labeled fire door, is there a non-fire-rated equivalent to the Orca OED8536?
Yes. The Marks USA M9900-36 is a 36 inch rim exit device, exit only, without a fire rating, and the Dexter ED1000-R-EO-3FT is a 3 foot Grade 1 rim device also without a fire rating. The Orca OED85 Series 36 inch device carries a fire rating and is UL listed, which is what a labeled opening requires; on an unlabeled opening the non-rated devices are valid choices.
16) What is the difference between the Orca OED8536 and a Grade 2 device like the Cal-Royal 5000?
The Cal-Royal 5000 is a 36 inch wide rim exit device with a touch bar on a Grade 2 chassis, heavy duty, without a fire rating. The Orca OED85 Series 36 inch device is ANSI Grade 1 and UL listed with a fire rating. If the spec on the drawing calls for Grade 1 fire exit hardware, the Grade 2 chassis will not satisfy it.
17) Is a crossbar device like the CRL Jackson 1095 a substitute for the Orca OED8536?
They are not interchangeable in appearance or spec. The CRL Jackson 1095 Series 48 inch is a crossbar rim panic device, exit only, wide stile, without a fire rating, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a 48 inch crossbar rim device also without a fire rating. The Orca OED85 Series device is a touch bar design operative over two thirds of the clear opening width and carries a fire rating, so on a labeled door the crossbar units are not a swap.
18) I need key access from outside, not exit only. What device covers that?
The Orca OED85 Series device is exit only as supplied and is available with outside trims. If you want a device catalogued with that function built in, the Sargent 8504 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device in night latch function, and the Detex V4003A/03AN is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device supplied with night latch trim.
19) Does a concealed vertical rod device like the Hager 4501 do the same job as the Orca OED8536?
No. The Hager 4501 Series 36 inch is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod exit device with a wide stile pushpad, and the 4601 Series 36 inch is the narrow stile concealed vertical rod version; both latch through rods rather than into a rim strike, and neither is fire rated. The Orca OED85 Series device is a rim device with the latch bolt at the rail and an auxiliary spring fire bolt in the lower edge of the door. Door prep and strike work are different between the two types.
20) What finishes does the Orca OED85 36 inch exit device come in?
Two: satin stainless steel and aluminum. The chassis substrate is aluminum, and the cap and rail are brass, stainless steel or steel depending on finish. For a corridor or entry run where you want the devices to match existing stainless pulls and push plates, the satin stainless is the closer match.
21) For a school corridor where I want a matching device on an unlabeled opening, what pairs with the Orca OED8536?
The Orca OED85 Series device is intended for institutions, schools, universities and commercial buildings, with hex key dogging. For unlabeled openings in the same building, the Design Hardware 1000R 33 inch heavy duty rim device and 2000R 33 inch standard duty rim device both use hex key dogging, and the TownSteel ED1100 36 inch is a Grade 1 heavy duty wide stile panic rim device. None of the three are fire rated.
