Orca Hardware OED8548-AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Orca OED85 rim device on a pair of doors?
Yes, provided the stile is at least 3-1/2 inches on double door applications. Orca lists the LBR fire exit hardware for all types of 8 foot by 8 foot double doors, including double egress. As a rim device it latches into a strike, so a pair still needs a mullion or a matching strike arrangement at the meeting stile.
2) What door thickness does the Orca OED85 exit device mount on?
Standard 1-3/4 inch doors, using thru-bolt mounting. That is the normal commercial metal door thickness. If your doors run thicker, up to 2-1/4 inches, the DORMA 9300 Series 48 inch wide stile rim device covers that range.
3) What door prep does the Orca OED85 need?
It uses the 161 ANSI cutout, the standard 2-1/8 inch bored prep found on most commercial hollow metal doors, and mounts with standard thru-bolts. If your existing doors are already prepped 161, no new cutting is needed for the chassis.
4) Is the Orca OED85 fire rated, and for how long?
Fire rated, UL and ULC listed to UL 10C and UBC 7-2-1997. The LBR fire exit hardware is listed for up to 3 hour metal door installations and 1-1/2 hour wood door fire labeled installations. It also carries ANSI Grade 1.
5) Does a fire rated exit device have a bottom rod or strike in the floor?
No floor strike here. The Orca LBR configuration runs no bottom strike, so wheelchairs, stretchers and carts roll straight through the opening. Security at the bottom comes from an auxiliary spring latch (fire bolt) in the lower door edge that releases under fire conditions to hold the door closed.
6) Does the Orca OED85 come with outside trim or a lever?
The device is an exit only function, so as supplied there is no outside operation. Outside trims are available separately and must be ordered to get key or lever access from the pull side.
7) Which other fire rated rim exit devices can replace a 48 inch Orca OED85 on a labeled door?
Fire rated rim options include the Marks USA M9900F-48, a 48 inch fire rated exit only rim device; the Dexter ED1000-R-F-EO, a Grade 1 fire rated rim device; the Arrow FS1250, a 32 inch fire rated rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors; and the Adams Rite 3700 Series in 30 inch, a fire rated narrow stile rim device that is also rated for wood doors. The Orca OED85 48 inch is ANSI Grade 1, UL listed, and is not rated for wood doors, so confirm the door width and leaf material before substituting.
8) What is the closest equivalent to the Orca OED8548 fire rated rim exit device from another brand?
The Marks USA M9900F-48 is the nearest match: it is a 48 inch fire rated rim exit device with an exit only function, the same width and same fire rated exit only configuration as the Orca OED85 Series 48 inch device. The Orca OED85 is ANSI Grade 1 and UL listed with hex key dogging. If a 36 inch opening is involved instead, the Marks USA M9900F-36 is the same device in the shorter length.
9) The Orca OED8548 is too wide for a 36 inch leaf. What should I use instead?
Step down to a 36 inch device. Grade 1 options in that width include the Corbin Russwin ED2200 wide stile exit only, the Corbin Russwin ED5200, the TownSteel ED1100 heavy duty wide stile, the Hager 4701 Series rim device, and the Marks USA M9900-36 exit only. If the opening is fire labeled, the Marks USA M9900F-36 is the 36 inch fire rated rim device. The Orca OED85 48 inch device is sized for doors up to 48 inches by 96 inches.
10) My aluminum storefront has a narrow stile. Is the Orca OED8548 the right device?
The Orca OED85 48 inch device requires a minimum 3-1/2 inch stile in double door applications and uses a 161 ANSI cutout. For a true narrow stile aluminum door, narrow stile rim devices include the Adams Rite 8800 Series 30 inch for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors, the TownSteel ED3700 36 inch Grade 1, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 36 inch Grade 1, and the Falcon 19-R 36 inch Grade 1 exit only. Of those, none is listed as fire rated; the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch is the narrow stile choice when a fire rating is required.
11) Can the Orca OED85 be dogged down for daytime free access?
It ships with hex key dogging. Keep in mind that on a fire rated opening, mechanical dogging is generally not permitted to be used to hold the latch retracted, so plan on the door latching on every cycle in fire rated service.
12) Is a rim exit device the right choice, or do I need vertical rods?
A rim device like the Orca OED85 latches into a strike on the frame head or a mullion, which makes it the simplest choice for a single door or a pair with a mullion. If you have a pair with no mullion and want both leaves to latch top and bottom, look at a concealed vertical rod device such as the Hager 4501 Series instead. The Orca handles pairs through its LBR fire bolt arrangement rather than a full rod set.
13) Is the Orca OED85 handed?
Non handed. One device covers left or right hand openings, which is useful when standardizing across a school or hospital where handing varies door to door.
14) I need a 48 inch rim exit device but the door is not fire labeled. What are the options besides the Orca OED8548?
For a non-labeled 48 inch opening, the Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48 inch heavy duty rim device with a push bar, the Cal-Royal A9820 is a 48 inch heavy duty exit only rim device, the Dormakaba 9300A is a 48 inch Grade 1 heavy duty wide stile panic rim device for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a 48 inch Grade 1 crossbar rim device. The Orca OED85 48 inch carries a fire rating and is the one to keep if the opening is labeled.
15) Is the Cal-Royal 5500 or A9820 a drop-in substitute for the Orca OED8548?
Both are 48 inch rim devices, but they are not equivalent on the point that matters for a labeled opening: the Cal-Royal 5500 and A9820 are Grade 2 heavy duty devices and are not fire rated, while the Orca OED85 48 inch device is ANSI Grade 1, UL listed, and fire rated. Use the Cal-Royal devices only where no fire label and no Grade 1 requirement apply.
16) I need a touch bar rather than a crossbar on a 48 inch door. How does that compare with the Orca OED8548?
The Orca OED85 48 inch device is specified as touch bar design, operative over two thirds of the door clear opening width, and is non-handed. Crossbar alternatives at 48 inches include the CRL Jackson 1095 Series crossbar rim panic device, exit only wide stile, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 Grade 1 crossbar rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors. Choose the crossbar only where the appearance or existing prep calls for it.
17) If I am standardizing a school on Grade 1 rim exit devices, which brands besides Orca cover both 36 and 48 inch doors?
The Orca OED85 Series is ANSI Grade 1 and UL listed and is offered in a 48 inch size for commercial use. Dexter's ED1000 Series covers both lengths with the Grade 1 ED1000-R-EO-3FT and ED1000-R-EO-4FT, plus a fire rated ED1000-R-F-EO. Marks USA covers both with the M9900F-36 and M9900F-48 fire rated exit only devices. Sargent offers the 2828 and 3828, both Grade 1 reversible exit only devices for 48 inch minimum door widths.
18) What finishes does the Orca OED85 48-inch exit device come in?
Two finish choices: satin stainless steel and aluminum. The cap and rail are brass, stainless steel or steel depending on finish, with a stainless latch bolt and spring, and the device substrate is aluminum. Pick the one that matches the other openings in the building, since both are common on institutional doors.
