1) Will the Arrow FS1250 rim exit device fit a wood fire door?
No. The FS1250 is the fire rated version of the Arrow S1250 rim device and it is set up for hollow metal doors, not wood. Arrow's fire exit hardware for hollow metal is UL and CUL listed for 3 hour A label and lesser doors; the wood door listing runs only to 1-1/2 hour B label, and this configuration is not wood door compatible. For a fire rated rim device on a wood door, look at the Adams Rite 3700 Series, which is fire rated and listed as wood door compatible.
2) What door thickness and stile width does the Arrow FS1250 need?
It mounts on 1-3/4 inch (44.45mm) thick doors only, and it needs a 4-5/8 inch minimum stile because it is a fire labeled device. The non-fire S1250 devices go down to a 4-1/2 inch stile. If your door has an aluminum narrow stile, this is the wrong device.
3) Can the 48 inch Arrow FS1250 be cut down for a 36 inch door?
No. The 48 inch FS1250 rail is sized for wide doors. Arrow furnishes the standard rail for doors up to 36 inches and that one can be cut down to 32 inches; alternate rail sizes cover narrow and wide doors. Order the device length that matches the door leaf rather than trimming the 48 inch rail.
4) Can I dog the Arrow S1250 exit device open during business hours?
Not on the fire rated FS1250. Fire exit hardware cannot be dogged, since the latch has to stay projected for the door to hold its label under NFPA 80. The non-fire S1250 devices ship with Allen key dogging standard and a cylinder dogging option. If you need a push bar you can hold retracted for daytime traffic, specify a non-fire rated rim device.
5) Does the Arrow S1250 meet Grade 1 and accessibility requirements for a school or hospital egress door?
It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, meets ANSI A117.1 accessibility, and is UL and CUL listed for the panic (accident hazard) standard. All S1250 devices comply with NFPA 101 life safety code, and the fire rated versions comply with NFPA 80. That covers the usual spec language on institutional egress openings.

No handing to specify. The S1250 chassis is reversible, so one device covers either swing. That is useful for a property manager stocking spares across a building instead of keeping both hands on the shelf.
8) Will the Arrow FS1250 latch into the strike already on my frame?

10) If the door does not need a fire label, what 48 inch rim exit devices are alternatives to the Arrow FS1250?
For non-rated 48 inch openings, the Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48 inch wide rim device with push bar, the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a Grade 1 48 inch crossbar rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors, the DORMA 9300A is a 48 inch wide stile Grade 1 rim device, exit only, and the CRL Jackson 1095 is a 48 inch crossbar rim panic device. 11) Is a narrow stile rim device an alternative to the Arrow FS1250?
Not for the same door. The Arrow FS1250 needs a 4-1/2 inch minimum stile, 4-5/8 inch on fire labeled devices, so it is a wide stile application. Narrow stile rim devices such as the TownSteel ED3700 and ED8900 at 36 inches or the Detex 40 Advantex are designed for narrow aluminum stiles and are not interchangeable with a wide stile mounting.
12) Is an electrified exit bar like the SDC or Securitron units a substitute for the Arrow FS1250?
They serve a different purpose. The Arrow FS1250 is a mechanical fire rated rim exit device with a 3/4 inch stainless latchbolt and Allen key dogging. The SDC MSB550 mechanical switch bar and PSB560 pressure sense bar at 36 inches release an electromagnetic lock rather than throwing a latch, and the Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar. Those are access control releases, not a latching rim device.
13) What finishes does the Arrow FS1250 come in?
