Arrow FS1250E AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the minimum stile width for an Arrow S1250 fire rated exit device?
Fire labeled S1250 devices need a 4-5/8 inch minimum stile. The non-fire version drops to 4-1/2 inch (114.3mm). That is a wide stile requirement, so it will not go on an aluminum storefront door. For narrow stile openings look at a narrow stile rim device such as the Corbin Russwin ED4200 or the TownSteel ED3700.
2) Can the Arrow S1250 rim device be cut down to fit a 32 inch door?
Yes. The standard rail ships for doors up to 36 inches and can be cut down on site to suit a 32 inch door, which is exactly how the FS1250 32 inch version is set up. Arrow also offers alternate rail sizes for narrower or wider doors if cutting is not practical.
3) Will the Arrow S1250 latch into a standard rim strike?
The latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4 inch (19.05mm) throw, which is the normal rim device projection and mates with a standard surface mounted rim strike on the frame stop. Being a rim device it latches at the strike only, so it suits a single door or a pair with a mullion, not a pair without one.
4) Does the Arrow S1250 meet Grade 1 and accessibility code for a commercial building?
It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, meets ANSI A117.1 accessibility code, and is UL and CUL listed for the panic (accident hazard) standard. The device complies with NFPA 101 life safety code, and the fire rated versions comply with NFPA 80. That set covers the usual specification language on a commercial egress opening.
5) My door is aluminum storefront with a narrow stile - what rim device should I use instead of the Arrow FS1250?
The Arrow FS1250 needs a 4-1/2 inch minimum stile, and 4-5/8 inch on fire labeled devices, so a narrow stile aluminum leaf will not take it. Narrow stile rim devices built for that condition include the Adams Rite 8800 Series, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 Grade 1 narrow stile rim device, the TownSteel ED3700 in 36 inch, and the Falcon 19-R exit only at 36 inch. The Detex 40 Advantex is a narrow stile Grade 1 device in an extra heavy duty build if the opening sees high traffic.
6) Do I need to order the Arrow S1250 exit device handed?
No handing to specify. The S1250 rail is reversible, so one device covers left and right hand openings. That is useful if you are stocking spares for a building with doors swinging both ways.
7) Can I hold the Arrow S1250 exit device unlocked during business hours?
Dogging comes standard as Allen-key type, so staff can dog the pushbar down to leave the door in push-pull during open hours. A cylinder dogging option is available if you would rather control it with a key. Note that dogging is not permitted on fire rated openings, so on the FS1250 fire configuration the door stays latched.
8) What is the difference between the Arrow FS1250 and a non-fire rim exit device?
The F prefix ahead of the part number is what makes it fire exit hardware: no mechanical dogging in use, and the UL/CUL fire listing for 3 hour A label hollow metal doors. Fire labeled devices also require the larger 4-5/8 inch minimum stile instead of 4-1/2 inch. If the opening is not a fire door, a standard panic rim device such as the Von Duprin 22 Series or the TownSteel ED1100 does the same egress job without the fire listing.
9) What other fire rated rim exit devices could I use instead of the Arrow FS1250?
Within the same class, the Marks USA M9900F comes in 36 inch and 48 inch fire rated exit only versions with a panic protector end cap, the Orca OED85 Series is a 36 inch fire rated rim device, and Dexter's ED1000-R-F is a Grade 1 fire rated rim device. All of those are hollow metal rather than wood door. If you need trim and a cylinder on the outside, the Sargent 8800 Series fire rated wide stile device is the heavier specification option.
10) Is an electrified exit bar a substitute for the Arrow FS1250?
No. The Arrow FS1250 is a mechanical fire rated rim exit device with a 3/4 inch throw stainless latchbolt that latches into a strike. Products like the SDC MSB550 mechanical switch bar and the SDC SureExit PSB560 pressure sense bar are 36 inch bars that release an electromagnetic lock rather than throwing a latchbolt, and neither is fire rated. The Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar built for 2-1/4 inch doors. If you need latching hardware on a labeled opening, those are not interchangeable with the FS1250.
11) I need night latch or keyed entry from outside - does the Arrow FS1250 cover that, or is there a better choice?
The Arrow FS1250 is a fire rated rim device with reversible handing and Allen-key dogging standard, with cylinder dogging available. If the outside trim function is the deciding factor, the Sargent 8504 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device in night latch function, and the Detex V4003A/03AN is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device supplied with night latch trim. The Corbin Russwin ED4200 is a Grade 1 narrow stile device listed as accepting trim.
12) For a high abuse opening like a school gym exit, is the Arrow FS1250 the right pick or is there a heavier device?
The Arrow FS1250 is ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 with a non-ferrous alloy chassis and cover, metal end caps, and a steel rail, and it carries the fire rating for labeled openings. If the opening does not need a fire label and you want a heavier build, the Detex 10 Advantex at 36 inch and the Detex 40 Advantex are Grade 1 extra heavy duty rim devices. The Dormakaba QED200 and the Stanley QED200 series are Grade 1 heavy duty devices with hex-key dogging. On a labeled door, the fire rating still governs the selection.
13) What finishes does the Arrow FS1250 come in?
Three painted finishes: aluminum (AL), dark bronze (BRZ), and light bronze (LBZ). If you are matching closers and pulls already on the building, those painted architectural finishes are the full set offered on this device.
14) What is the Arrow S1250 exit device made of and will it hold up in a high traffic entrance?
Chassis and cover are non-ferrous alloy with metal end caps, the rail assembly is steel, and the latchbolt is stainless steel. It is a commercial rated device certified Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.3, which is the top durability grade for exit hardware, so it is built for school, healthcare, and multi-family egress traffic rather than light duty use.
15) Can I use a dummy exit device in place of the Arrow FS1250 on the inactive leaf of a pair?
No. The Arrow FS1250 is a functioning fire rated rim device with a 3/4 inch throw latchbolt and UL panic listing. The Detex Advantex 00 Series is a Grade 1 wide stile dummy exit device with no latching function, and the Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is a fire rated wide stile 8800 Series device in dummy function. Those match the look of a working device but do not secure or release the opening, so they are only appropriate where no latching is required.
