Arrow ED910-48 AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Arrow ED910 fire rated? I need a device for a labeled stair door.
No, the ED910 is a panic device only, not fire rated, and it has hex-key dogging, which fire rated openings do not allow. For a labeled door use a fire rated rim device such as the Marks USA M9900F, available in 36 and 48 inch, the Dexter ED1000 fire rated rim device, or the Orca OED85 Series. The ED910 is UL and CUL Listed for the panic (accident hazard) standard and complies with NFPA 101.
2) Do I have to order the Arrow ED910 left or right hand?
No handing to specify. The ED910 is reversible, so one part number covers either swing and you can stock a single device across a building of mixed openings.
3) Will the Arrow ED910 work on a pair of doors?
Only with a removable mullion between the leaves, or on the active leaf of a pair that has an overlapping astragal setup. A rim device latches into a strike on the frame stop, so it needs something to latch into at the jamb. To latch a true pair with a clear opening, go to a vertical rod device instead, such as the Hager 4501 or 4601 Series concealed vertical rod exit devices.
4) Can the Arrow ED910 be used to replace an existing exit device on an occupied door?
Yes, the ED910 series is built to replace or upgrade existing devices, and reversible handing means the same unit works whichever way the door swings. Check two things on the door you are changing out: the stile has to be at least 4-1/2 inches, and the leaf has to be 1-3/4 inches thick.
5) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches. What rim exit device works instead of the Arrow ED910?
The Arrow ED910 fits 1-3/4 inch doors as standard. For thicker doors, the Dormakaba 9300 Series 48 inch wide stile Grade 1 device covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch, and the Adams Rite 8800 Series narrow stile covers the same 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch range. The SDC S6136 Spectra covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Securitron EMB exit bar is listed at 2-1/4 inch.
6) Which other 48 inch rim exit devices are direct equivalents to the Arrow ED910 48 inch?
The Arrow ED910 in the 48 inch size is a Grade 1 non-fire-rated rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors. Comparable 48 inch non-rated rim devices include the Corbin Russwin ED3200, a Grade 1 crossbar rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors; the Dormakaba 9300 Series 48 inch exit only, Grade 1 wide stile for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors; the Sargent 2828 and 3828, both Grade 1 reversible wide stile devices for 48 inch doors; and the Dexter ED1000-R-EO-4FT, a Grade 1 rim device. The CRL Jackson 1095 Series 48 inch is a crossbar wide stile version.
7) The Arrow ED910 is not wood door compatible. What rim exit device should I use on a wood door?
The Arrow ED910 is listed as not wood door compatible. Among rim devices that are, the Adams Rite 8700 Series 30 inch narrow stile is wood door compatible and Grade 1, and the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch is wood door compatible, Grade 1 and fire rated. Both are narrow stile designs rather than the ED910's wide push bar format.
8) Can an SDC pressure sense bar or switch bar replace an Arrow ED910 rim exit device?
No. The Arrow ED910 is a mechanical Grade 1 rim exit device with a stainless steel latchbolt and a surface applied strike that latches the door. The SDC PSB560 SureExit pressure sense bar and the SDC MSB550 mechanical switch bar are exit bars that release an electromagnetic lock rather than throwing a latchbolt into a strike, so they only work on a maglock opening. The Securitron EMB is likewise an electromechanical exit bar. If you want an electrified rim latch device instead, the SDC S6136 Spectra is a rim exit device for 4 inch wide stile and 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors.
9) Is a strike and mounting hardware included with the Arrow ED910?
Yes. A surface applied, nylon coated strike ships with the device, and both wood and machine screws are furnished standard. Being a rim device, it latches into that surface strike on the frame stop, so there is no head or threshold prep to do.
10) Can I hold the door pushed-open during business hours with the Arrow ED910?
Yes, it has hex-type hold down dogging, so an Allen key depresses the push rail and keeps the latch retracted for free ingress, then releases it for after hours. Do not rely on dogging as a substitute for a fire rated device, since the ED910 is not fire rated.
11) How is the Arrow ED910 different from the PEC910?
Same basic function, different build. The ED910 is the value device for everyday openings. The PEC910 uses a one-piece design with a patented permanent end cap, which is the one to specify for high traffic or high vandalism doors where end caps get torn off. Both are BHMA Grade 1 certified.
12) Is the Arrow ED910 heavy duty enough for a school or apartment entrance?
It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, the highest commercial grade for exit devices, with a stamped steel chassis, cast zinc chassis cover, stainless steel latchbolt, and powder coated steel rail (stainless rail optional). For an abused door, the PEC910 with the permanent end cap is the better call within the same series.
13) What is a lighter-duty or Grade 2 alternative to the Arrow ED910 for a low-traffic door?
The Arrow ED910 is an ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 device. If the opening does not call for Grade 1, the Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48 inch push bar rim device rated Grade 2, and the Cal-Royal 5000 is a 36 inch touch bar rim device also rated Grade 2. Within Grade 1, the Hager 4701 Series 36 inch is described as standard duty, and the Design Hardware 2000R 33 inch is a standard duty rim device with hex key dogging, the same dogging type the ED910 uses.
14) Which rim exit devices are a step up from the Arrow ED910 for high traffic or vandal-prone doors?
The Arrow ED910 is described as a value device for everyday solutions, with the PEC910 being the one-piece patented permanent end cap version aimed at high traffic and high vandalism areas. Other heavier-duty options include the Detex 10 Advantex 36 inch, an extra heavy duty Grade 1 wide stile device, and the Detex 40 Advantex, extra heavy duty Grade 1 in narrow stile. The Marks USA M9900 36 inch uses a Panic Protector end cap.
15) I need a rim device with lever trim, not just exit only like some of the alternatives. How does the Arrow ED910 compare?
The Arrow ED910 is a Grade 1 rim device designed to replace or upgrade existing devices. Several comparable rim devices are catalogued exit only, including the Corbin Russwin ED2200 36 inch Grade 1, the Sargent 2828 and 3828, and the Marks USA M9900 36 inch. Devices that state trim capability include the Corbin Russwin ED5200 36 inch wide stile Grade 1 and the ED4200 narrow stile Grade 1, both listed as exit only plus accepts trim, and the Dormakaba E2103 with 4908A trim in a classroom function. The Sargent 8504 is a narrow stile rim device in night latch function.
16) Is a concealed vertical rod device an alternative to the Arrow ED910 rim device?
They solve different openings. The Arrow ED910 is a rim device that latches into a surface applied, nylon coated strike on the frame. The Hager 4501 Series 36 inch and Hager 4601 Series 36 inch are Grade 1 concealed vertical rod devices, which latch top and bottom inside the door and require a door prepped for rods. Choose the rim device for a standard single door with a frame strike, and a vertical rod device where you have a pair of doors or no usable strike location.
17) Do I need to specify handing when cross-shopping the Arrow ED910 against other rim devices?
The Arrow ED910 is reversible, so one device covers either hand. Several comparables are similarly non-handed or reversible: the Von Duprin 22-3FT 36 inch is Grade 1 wide stile and non-handed, the BEST 2401 Series narrow stile is exit only and non-handed, the BEST Precision 5101 is a non-handed universal design, the CRL Jackson 1295 Series is non-handed, and the Sargent 2828 and 3828 are reversible.
18) Is the Detex 00 Series a substitute for the Arrow ED910?
No. The Arrow ED910 is a working Grade 1 panic device with a stainless steel latchbolt and surface applied strike. The Detex Advantex 00 Series is a dummy exit device in a super-heavy-duty wide stile design, meaning it provides the look and push surface without latching. The Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is likewise catalogued in a dummy function. Use those only on the inactive leaf or where no latching is required.
19) What finishes does the Arrow ED910 48 inch rim device come in?
Three: 630 satin stainless steel, 689 aluminum painted, and 690 dark bronze painted. 689 is the usual match for clear anodized aluminum storefront and 690 for bronze anodized, so on a retrofit pick to match the existing frame rather than the old device.
20) Does the Arrow ED910 accept outside trim for keyed entry from the exterior?
The ED910 as listed is the exit device itself, sized at 48 inches, and outside trim is a separate order. If keyed outside access and a documented trim function are central to the job, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 and ED5200 are listed as accepting trim, and Detex offers the V4003A/03AN with night latch trim.
21) Which alternatives to the Arrow ED910 also offer hex key dogging?
The Arrow ED910 uses a hex-type hold down for dogging. Among comparable rim devices, the Design Hardware 1000R 33 inch heavy duty and the Design Hardware 2000R 33 inch standard duty both use hex key dogging, and the Stanley Security QED200 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile rim device with hex-key dogging.
