Arrow 48-01-G-10-RR – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Arrow 4800 Series narrow stile rim exit device fit a 1-3/4 inch aluminum storefront door?
Yes. The Arrow 4800 rim device is built for 1-3/4 inch doors and needs a stile of at least 1-3/4 inches, so a standard aluminum storefront stile takes it. Wood, hollow metal and extruded aluminum doors are all listed door types for the device. Allow 3-1/4 inches maximum for the rail projection off the face of the door when checking clearance to a mullion, sidelite or adjacent leaf.
2) Is the Arrow 4800 exit device handed, and how do I figure out which hand I need?
Handed, yes. The 4800 is ordered as either LHRB (left hand reverse bevel) or RHRB (right hand reverse bevel), and every finish is stocked both ways. Exit devices go on out-swinging doors, so you are always looking at a reverse bevel: stand outside the door, and if the hinges are on your right it is right hand reverse. Order the wrong hand and the device will not mount.
3) Can I use the Arrow 4800 rim device on a fire rated door?
Not as ordered here. The standard 4800 is a panic device only and carries no fire rating. Arrow builds a fire exit version under the F prefix, which is UL and CUL listed to 3 hour A label on hollow metal doors and up to 1-1/2 hour B label on wood. If the opening is fire rated, you need the F-prefixed part. For a ready fire rated 48 inch rim device from another brand, the Marks USA M9900F 48 inch is rim, exit only and fire rated.
4) Will the Arrow 4800 latch into my existing rim strike?
The 4800 uses a stainless steel latchbolt with a 3/4 inch throw, which is the normal throw for a surface rim strike. If the existing strike was set for another rim panic device at the same throw and the same rail height, it will usually catch, but any change in device centerline means the strike gets relocated. Mounting hardware comes in the box: wood and machine screws standard, with thru bolts available.
5) Can I hold the Arrow 4800 exit device open during business hours?
Yes. Allen-type (hex key) dogging is standard on the 4800, so staff can depress the pushbar and dog it down for free swing during open hours, then undog at close. If you would rather key it, order the CD prefix for cylinder dogging, which keeps the function under key control instead of a loose hex wrench. Note that dogging is not permitted on fire rated openings.
6) My opening is a wood door - what should I use instead of the Arrow 4800 Series?
The Arrow 4800 Series is not carried as wood door compatible. Among rim exit devices listed for wood doors, the Adams Rite 8700 Series is a 30 inch narrow stile rim device, Grade 1 and non fire rated, listed wood door compatible, and the Adams Rite 3700 Series is a 30 inch narrow stile Grade 1 rim device that is both fire rated and wood door compatible. Both use starwheel interlocking, so verify the strike condition on your frame before switching.
7) I need a fire rated exit device for a labeled opening - can I use the Arrow 4800 Series as supplied?
The Arrow 4800 Series as configured is not a fire rated device. For a labeled opening, devices carried as fire rated include the Adams Rite 3700 Series, a 30 inch fire rated narrow stile rim device rated Grade 1 that is wood door compatible; the Dexter ED1000-R-F-EO, a Grade 1 fire rated rim device; the Marks USA M9900F in 36 inch and 48 inch fire rated exit only versions; and the Orca OED85 Series 36 inch fire rated rim device. If you want to stay in narrow stile on the labeled door, the Adams Rite 3700 is the narrow stile choice in that group.
8) The Arrow 4800 is handed - what non-handed rim exit device can I stock instead to cut down on SKUs?
The Arrow 4800 Series is handed and must be specified left hand reverse or right hand reverse. If you would rather stock one device for both swings, the BEST 2401 Series is a narrow stile rim device built exit only and non-handed, and the BEST Precision 5101 Series is a non-handed universal design rim device. In wide stile, the Von Duprin 22 is a 36 inch non-handed pushpad rim device rated Grade 1 for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the CRL Jackson 1295 Series is a non-handed push pad rim panic device for 1-3/4 inch doors. Sargent 2828 and 3828 are reversible rim devices for 48 inch doors.
9) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inch - what rim exit device covers that instead of the Arrow 4800 Series?
The Arrow 4800 Series is built for a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. For thicker leaves, the Adams Rite 8800 Series covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch as a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device, and the DORMA 9300 Series 48 inch wide stile Grade 1 device also covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch. The SDC S6136 Spectra covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch in a 4 inch wide stile electrified rim device.
10) What is the difference between a narrow stile and a wide stile rim exit device, and which do I need?
Narrow stile devices like the Arrow 4800 have a compact chassis that fits on a stile as small as 1-3/4 inches, which is why they go on aluminum storefront and glass entrance doors. Wide stile devices need more face area and suit hollow metal or flush wood leaves. Measure the stile beside the glass first. If you have a wide stile hollow metal door, the Corbin Russwin ED5200 or the Von Duprin 22 Series are wide stile Grade 1 rim devices; for narrow stile alternatives, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 and TownSteel ED3700 are both Grade 1 narrow stile rim.
11) Does the exit-only Arrow 4800 give me a way in from outside?
No. Exit only means there is no outside trim and no cylinder in the device as supplied, so the door is free egress from inside and locked with no key access from outside. If you need entry, you need a device configured to accept trim. The Corbin Russwin ED4200 is a narrow stile Grade 1 rim device listed as exit only or accepting trim, and the Sargent 8504 is a narrow stile rim device in night latch function, which gives key retraction of the latch from outside.
12) Can I standardize a whole building on the Arrow 4800 if some doors are non-handed devices now?
You can, but each opening has to be surveyed. The 4800 is a handed device, so every leaf needs its hand recorded before ordering, unlike non-handed devices such as the BEST 2401 narrow stile or the Von Duprin 22 Series, which can be stocked one way and set to suit. If you want one spare on the shelf covering any door, a non-handed device saves carrying two. If you want one series across the building with a matching Grade 1 certification and a single finish, the 4800 does that in seven finishes.
13) What 48 inch rim exit devices can I cross-reference against the Arrow 4800 Series for a wide opening?
The Arrow 4800 Series covered here is the 48 inch device. Other 48 inch rim devices include the Corbin Russwin ED3200, a Grade 1 crossbar rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors in wide stile; the DORMA 9300 Series 48 inch wide stile panic rim device, Grade 1 heavy duty, for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors; the CRL Jackson 1095 Series 48 inch crossbar rim panic device, exit only wide stile; the Cal-Royal A9820 48 inch exit only device; the Cal-Royal 5500 48 inch push bar device; and the Marks USA M9900F 48 inch fire rated exit only device. The Arrow is the narrow stile option in that group, so the wide stile peers need enough stile face to land the chassis.
14) Is the Cal-Royal A9820 a direct swap for the Arrow 4800 Series narrow stile device?
Not a direct swap. The Arrow 4800 Series is a narrow stile rim device certified Grade 1 to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 and fits a 1-3/4 inch minimum stile. The Cal-Royal A9820 is a 48 inch heavy duty exit only rim device carried at Grade 2. Both are non fire rated, but if your spec calls for a Grade 1 narrow stile device the Cal-Royal is a different grade and is not offered as a narrow stile unit.
15) Which narrow stile rim devices are rated above heavy duty if the Arrow 4800 is going on a high traffic entrance?
The Arrow 4800 Series is a Grade 1 device certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 and UL listed for panic. If you want a step beyond heavy duty for very high cycle traffic, the Detex 40 Advantex Series is a narrow stile Grade 1 rim device carried at extra heavy duty, and the Detex 10 Advantex Series is the wide stile 36 inch extra heavy duty equivalent. The Dormakaba QED200 and Stanley QED200 are Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile devices with hex key dogging, which matches the Allen-type dogging standard on the Arrow.
16) Is the SDC MSB550 switch bar an alternative to the Arrow 4800 Series rim exit device?
No. The Arrow 4800 Series is a mechanical rim exit device with a stainless steel latchbolt at 3/4 inch throw that latches into a rim strike. The SDC MSB550 Series is a 36 inch mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock, and the SDC PSB560 SureExit is a pressure sense bar; both fit narrow or wide stile doors but neither provides a latch. They serve mag-lock openings, not a latched panic opening. For an electrified but latching device, the SDC S6136 Spectra is an architectural rim exit device.
17) What is the difference between the Arrow 4800 Series and a concealed vertical rod device like the Hager 4601?
The Arrow 4800 Series is a rim device: the latch engages a strike on the frame at the bar. The Hager 4601 Series is a 36 inch Grade 1 narrow stile concealed vertical rod exit device, which latches top and bottom through rods concealed in the door, and the Hager 4501 is the wide stile pushpad version of that concealed vertical rod device. Vertical rod units require a door prepped for the rods and typically a top strike and bottom prep, so it is a different opening prep than the rim strike the Arrow uses.
18) What finishes does the Arrow 4800 rim exit device come in?
Seven BHMA finishes, each available in both handings: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 dark oxidized satin bronze (oil rubbed), 613E dark oxidized bronze equivalent, 629 bright stainless and 630 satin stainless. If you are standardizing a building, 630 satin stainless is the usual match to aluminum storefront and hollow metal, while 613 pairs with bronze entrances.
19) What are the Arrow 4800 chassis and rail actually made of?
The chassis is non-ferrous alloy with a cover of cold drawn brass, bronze or stainless steel depending on the finish ordered, and the rail is roll formed brass, bronze or stainless. The latchbolt is stainless steel. That mix of non-ferrous chassis and stainless latch holds up better than plated steel on exterior storefront doors that see weather at the threshold.
