Dormakaba 9700AA 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How do you secure a pair of doors with the DORMA 9000 Series rim exit devices?
Rim devices latch into a strike, not into each other, so a pair needs a removable mullion. Both leaves get rim devices and function as single doors day to day; pull the mullion when you need the full clear opening for moving equipment. Steel and aluminum mullions come in 8 foot and 10 foot lengths. If you never want a mullion in the opening, a vertical rod device is the other route.
2) Can you dog down the DORMA 9700 panic device to keep the door push-open during business hours?
Yes. Hex key dogging is standard on the panic models, so you can hold the touchbar depressed and leave the latch retracted during open hours. Two order-time changes exist: LD drops dogging entirely, and CD swaps in cylinder dogging with an SC keyway cylinder keyed different to a random combination, which is what you want when you don't want a hex key floating around a school or public building. Fire rated models in the series have no dogging at all.
3) What does exit only mean on the DORMA 9700AA, and can I add a lever on the outside?
Exit only means the device is the push side alone, with no outside trim. There's no lever or pull on the corridor side and no key access through the device as ordered. If you need entry from outside, that is a different configuration, not an accessory you bolt onto this one. The 9000 Series does offer free wheeling lever trim in a range of architectural finishes, so specify the trim version up front rather than trying to retrofit.
4) What options should I specify when ordering a DORMA 9000 Series exit device for a school or hospital?
Five add-ons are worth deciding at order time. AM is the antimicrobial coating, which is the one healthcare and school specs usually call for on a touchbar. SNB is sex nuts, for through-bolting the device. TX is security screws where tampering is a concern. HC is the hurricane option and includes SNB. BF is the barrier free version, a CBC-compliant option holding operating force to a maximum of 5 pounds, which is what accessibility-driven specs on the 9700 ask for.
5) Should I use a narrow stile or a wide stile rim exit device?
Stile width decides it. Narrow stile devices like the 9700AA have a compact chassis for aluminum storefront and glass entrance doors where there isn't much metal beside the glass. Wide stile devices need more rail to mount on and are the norm on hollow metal. If the leaf is hollow metal or wide rail, look at a wide stile device such as the Corbin Russwin ED5200 or the Von Duprin 22 Series. If you're on storefront, narrow stile is the only thing that mounts.
6) What is a comparable narrow stile Grade 1 rim exit device if the DORMA 9700 isn't available?
Several narrow stile Grade 1 rim devices cover the same application. The Corbin Russwin ED4200 is Grade 1 narrow stile and accepts trim as well as exit only. The TownSteel ED3700 and ED8900 are both heavy duty Grade 1 narrow stile. Falcon's 1590EO and 1790EO are Grade 1 narrow stile exit only. Note the door thickness difference: the Corbin ED4200 and both Falcon devices are listed at 1-3/4 inches, while the 9700AA covers 1-3/4 through 2-1/4, so on a thicker leaf the DORMA is the one that fits.
7) What is the closest narrow stile Grade 1 rim exit device to the DORMA 9700AA if I need a 48 inch device?
The DORMA 9700AA is a 48 inch narrow stile rim exit device, Grade 1, exit only, non-fire-rated. For a like-for-like narrow stile Grade 1 rim device from another brand, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device and the TownSteel ED8900 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device, both non-fire-rated; the Falcon 1790EO is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device in exit only function. The Corbin Russwin ED4200, TownSteel ED8900 and Falcon 1790EO are each catalogued at 36 or 42 inch device lengths, so confirm the device length against your door width before ordering.
8) My opening is fire rated - can I use the DORMA 9700AA narrow stile exit device on it?
The DORMA 9700AA is not fire rated, and hex key dogging is standard on the panic models while fire rated models carry no dogging, so a fire rated opening needs a fire rated device instead. The Adams Rite 3700 Series is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device that is fire rated. Among wider stile fire rated rim devices, the Marks USA M9900F is offered in a 48 inch exit only version, and the Dexter ED1000 Series is available as a Grade 1 fire rated rim exit device. Note that fire rated rim devices do not dog open, since a fire door must latch on every close.
9) What is the difference between the DORMA 9700AA and a wide stile rim exit device like the Von Duprin 22?
The DORMA 9700AA is a narrow stile rim exit device, built for the slim vertical rails of aluminum storefront and similar openings. The Von Duprin 22 Series is a wide stile pushpad rim exit device, Grade 1, non-handed, non-fire-rated, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ED5200 is a Grade 1 wide stile rim exit device. A wide stile chassis needs more rail face to land on than a narrow stile door provides, so the stile width of the leaf, not the device grade, is what decides between them. The 9700AA is non-handed and fits doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick.
10) I need trim on the outside of the door - what rim exit device should I use instead of the DORMA 9700AA exit only?
The DORMA 9700AA is configured exit only, meaning there is no outside trim to enter through. If the opening needs outside operation, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device catalogued for exit only or with trim, and the Corbin Russwin ED5200 is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device with the same exit only or accepts trim range. For key-only reentry on a narrow design device, the Sargent 8504 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device in night latch function, and the Detex V4003A/03AN is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device offered with night latch trim.
11) Is an SDC pressure sense bar or switch bar a substitute for the DORMA 9700AA rim exit device?
No - they solve a different problem. The DORMA 9700AA is a Grade 1 rim exit device: it carries its own latch and strike, with a 430 strike standard, so the device itself secures the door. The SDC PSB560 SureExit is a 36 inch pressure sense bar and the SDC MSB550 is a 36 inch mechanical switch bar with electromagnetic lock release; both are offered for narrow or wide stile doors, but they release a separate locking device rather than latching the opening themselves. Use them where a maglock or electric lock is doing the securing; use the 9700AA where the exit device is the lock.
12) My doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inch - which rim exit devices besides the DORMA 9700AA will fit?
The DORMA 9700AA is built for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick, and DORMA directs anything over 2-1/4 inch to technical service. Most comparable rim devices are catalogued at 1-3/4 inch only, including the Corbin Russwin ED4200 narrow stile, the Falcon 19-R narrow stile and the Von Duprin 22. Devices that cover more than 1-3/4 inch are the Adams Rite 8800 Series, a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device listed for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch, and the SDC S6136, listed for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. If the leaf is 2 inch or 2-1/4 inch, that thickness range is the first spec to check.
13) Is a concealed vertical rod device an alternative to the DORMA 9700AA rim device on my opening?
Only if the opening calls for top and bottom latching. The DORMA 9700AA is a rim exit device: it latches into a strike on the frame, with a 430 strike standard, and on pairs it works against a removable mullion so the doors normally function as single doors. The Hager 4601 Series is a 36 inch Grade 1 concealed vertical rod narrow stile exit device and the Hager 4501 Series is a 36 inch Grade 1 concealed vertical rod device with a wide stile pushpad; these latch into the head and sill instead of a frame strike and require door prep for the rods. Choose rim when a strike or mullion is available, vertical rod when the pair must open full width with no mullion.
14) I need a hurricane rated exit device - does the DORMA 9700AA cover that or do I need a different device?
The DORMA 9700AA can be ordered with the HC hurricane option, which includes sex nuts, and hurricane rated devices ship with the 463 rim strike standard rather than the 430 strike used on standard devices; SNB sex nut fasteners are standard on hurricane and fire rated builds. None of the comparable rim exit devices, including the narrow stile Adams Rite 8800 Series or the Corbin Russwin ED4200, are catalogued with a hurricane option, so the 9700AA with HC is the path when a wind-borne debris opening is on the drawing.
15) The opening has to meet a 5 pound maximum operating force - what are my options next to the DORMA 9700AA?
The DORMA 9700AA can be ordered with the BF barrier free option, a CBC-compliant configuration for a maximum 5 pound operating force, and the 9000 Series complies with NFPA life safety code. That barrier free option is specific to the DORMA 9000 Series devices; comparable Grade 1 narrow stile rim devices such as the TownSteel ED3700, the TownSteel ED8900 and the Corbin Russwin ED4200 are catalogued as heavy duty Grade 1 narrow stile devices without a stated reduced-force variant. Where an accessibility inspector is checking operating force at the door, specify the 9700AA with BF.
16) What is the difference between the DORMA 9700AA and the TownSteel ED9700 - the model numbers look the same?
The model numbers match but the devices do not. The DORMA 9700AA is a 48 inch narrow stile Grade 1 heavy duty rim exit device, exit only, non-handed. The TownSteel ED9700 Series is a 36 inch Grade 1 heavy duty rim exit device with a wide stile chassis, non-fire-rated. Stile type is the deciding difference: the DORMA device is built for narrow stile aluminum openings while the TownSteel 9700 needs a wide stile leaf. For a TownSteel narrow stile equivalent, the ED3700 and ED8900 Series are Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile rim devices.
17) Is the DORMA 9700 Grade 1, and is it heavy duty enough for a high traffic entrance?
Grade 1, heavy duty, and commercial rated. The chassis is cast, and the touchbar has a reduced projection so it catches less on carts and bags. That combination is the reason it gets specified on school, university, and other institutional entries where the door cycles all day.
18) Can the DORMA 9000 Series exit device be tied into an access control system?
Yes, through motorized latch retraction. MLR uses a motor to draw the touchbar in and retract the latch, and it can be triggered by a range of credentials. It also holds the bar electrically dogged in the retracted position during unsecured hours, which is how you get a card-reader entry on the outside while the door stays free egress. The motor is quiet, which matters on a device sitting in a lobby.
19) Is there a Grade 2 alternative to the DORMA 9700AA rim exit device?
The DORMA 9700AA is a Grade 1, heavy duty commercial rim exit device. If your spec allows a Grade 2 chassis, the Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48 inch wide rim exit device with a push bar, Grade 2, heavy duty and non-fire-rated, and the Cal-Royal 5000 is a 36 inch wide rim device with a touch bar on a Grade 2 chassis. Both Cal-Royal devices are wide format rather than narrow stile, so verify your stile face before substituting, and confirm the specifying authority accepts Grade 2 for the traffic on that opening.
20) My school opening takes heavy abuse - is there a heavier device than the DORMA 9700AA narrow stile?
The DORMA 9700AA is a heavy duty Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device with a cast chassis, built for high impact applications such as schools, universities and other institutional buildings. If you want a step up in published duty level while staying narrow stile, the Detex 40 Advantex Series is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device rated extra heavy duty. In wide stile, the Detex 10 Advantex Series is a 36 inch Grade 1 rim device also rated extra heavy duty. Duty level and stile type are separate decisions - the leaf still has to have the rail face for the chassis you choose.
21) I need electrified latch retraction - how does the DORMA 9700AA compare to the SDC Spectra S6000 or Securitron EMB?
The DORMA 9700AA is available with motorized latch retraction, which draws in the touch bar with a quiet motor and can electrically hold the push bar retracted during non-secure hours. The SDC S6136 Spectra S6000 Series is a 36 inch electrified architectural rim exit device with a 4 inch wide stile, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. The Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar catalogued for 2-1/4 inch door thickness. The 9700AA is the narrow stile option of the three, and it accepts doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick.
22) Is a crossbar rim panic device the same as the DORMA 9700AA touchbar device?
They are different bar styles for the same job. The DORMA 9700AA uses a reduced projection touchbar assembly that minimizes catch hazards on a narrow stile door. The CRL Jackson 1095 Series is a 48 inch crossbar rim panic exit device in exit only function, wide stile and non-fire-rated, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a Grade 1 48 inch crossbar rim exit device, wide stile, for 1-3/4 inch doors. A crossbar stands off the door face where a touchbar sits flush, which matters where carts, gurneys or backpacks pass through the opening.
23) What narrow stile rim exit devices besides the DORMA 9700AA offer hex key dogging?
The DORMA 9700AA comes with hex key dogging standard on the panic models, and cylinder dogging with an SC keyway cylinder is available as an ordering option. The Stanley Security QED200 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile rim exit device with hex key dogging. The Design Hardware 1000R is a 33 inch heavy duty rim device with hex key dogging, and the Design Hardware 2000R is a 33 inch standard duty wide stile rim device with hex key dogging. If a facility keys its dogging rather than using a hex wrench, the 9700AA cylinder dogging option keeps that under key control.
24) Are the Adams Rite interlocking rim devices interchangeable with the DORMA 9700AA narrow stile exit device?
They are both narrow stile Grade 1 rim exit devices, but the latching differs. The Adams Rite 8700 Series, 8800 Series and EX88 are narrow stile Grade 1 rim devices built around a starwheel interlocking or interlocking latch design, while the DORMA 9700AA uses a conventional rim latch against a 430 strike, with the 463 rim strike on fire and hurricane rated builds. An interlocking device engages the strike differently, so a swap means changing the frame strike, not just the device. Confirm the existing strike and its prep before treating either as a drop-in for the other.
25) What finishes does the DORMA 9700AA 48 inch exit device come in?
Fifteen finishes cover both architectural and powder coated ranges: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 696 satin brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 691 light bronze, 695 dark bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, 689 aluminum, and 693 black. For matching existing openings in a building, 689 aluminum and 630 satin stainless are the ones that line up with most aluminum storefront and commercial hollow metal already in place.
26) Is the antimicrobial coating on the DORMA 9000 exit device standard or an extra?
It's an order option, coded AM, not included by default. The 9000 Series is built to take an antimicrobial protected coating on the touchbar, which is the surface every person leaving the building puts a hand on. Healthcare, school, and food service specs generally call it out, so add AM to the order if that's your facility.
