The 9000 Series heavy-duty exit device provides superior durability while the smooth reduced projection touchbar assembly minimizes catch hazards.

For paired doors where a full-width opening is only occasionally required, removable mullions are used. Doors are fitted with rim exit devices and normally function as single doors. Steel and aluminum mullions are available in 8' or 10' lengths.

Motorized Latch Retraction

1) Can I put a DORMA 9700 rim device on a pair of doors with no center mullion?
Not on its own. A rim device latches into a strike on the frame or on a mullion, so a pair without a center post gives it nothing to catch. DORMA's answer for pairs that only occasionally need the full clear opening is a removable mullion: fit both leaves with rim devices, run them as single doors day to day, and pull the mullion when you need the width. Removable mullions come in steel and aluminum, 8 foot or 10 foot. If you need a true mullion-free pair, you are looking at vertical rod devices instead, such as the Hager 4601 concealed vertical rod narrow stile device.
2) Do I need to order handing for the DORMA 9700 exit device?
No handing to specify. The 9700 is non-handed, so the same 36 inch device goes on a left or right hand door. That is what makes it workable for a property manager standardizing across a building: one part number covers every swing.
3) What does "exit only" mean on the DORMA 9700BB, and can I add a lever on the outside?
Exit only means the device ships with no outside trim. Push the bar and you get out; from the pull side there is no lever, no cylinder, no way in. That is the right configuration for a stair discharge, a rear service door, or any egress-only leaf. The 9000 Series does offer free wheeling lever trim in a range of architectural finishes, but if you need outside access you have to order that trim separately, since it is not included with the exit only device.
4) Can I hold the DORMA 9700 exit device unlocked during business hours?
Only if you order dogging. Dogging is a choice on the order, not a standard feature: pick CD for cylinder dogging, which ships with a cylinder in the SC keyway keyed different to a random combination, or LD for less dogging if you want the latch to project at all times. There is also a motorized latch retraction (MLR) version, which pulls the touch bar in electrically and can hold the device dogged during non-secure hours, then drop back to latched on a schedule or a credential.
5) What is the difference between a narrow stile and a wide stile rim exit device, and which do I need?
It comes down to how much flat stile the door gives you. The DORMA 9700 is a narrow stile device, sized for aluminum storefront and other thin-stile leaves where a wide pushpad chassis will not land. On a hollow metal door with a full-width stile, a wide stile device is the normal choice and gives you a longer pushpad, for example the Corbin Russwin ED5200 or the Von Duprin 22 Series, both Grade 1 wide stile rim devices. Measure the stile before you commit: a wide stile device simply will not mount on a narrow storefront rail.
6) What is a comparable Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device to the DORMA 9700?
Several sit in the same slot. The TownSteel ED8900 and ED3700 are both 36 inch Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile rim devices. The Corbin Russwin ED4200 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device at 36 inches, rated for 1-3/4 inch doors, and it accepts trim as well as running exit only. For a wood leaf, the Adams Rite 8700 Series is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device that is wood door compatible, and the Adams Rite 3700 Series is the wood-compatible narrow stile option when the opening is also fire rated.
8) The door has a wide stile - is the DORMA 9700 still the right device?
The DORMA 9700 is built as a narrow stile device, so a wide stile leaf calls for a wide stile chassis. The TownSteel ED9700 in 36 inch is Grade 1 heavy duty wide stile and non-fire-rated. The Corbin Russwin ED2200 in 36 inch and the Von Duprin 22 in 36 inch are also Grade 1 wide stile rim devices, the Von Duprin listed non-handed for 1-3/4 inch doors, matching the non-handed build of the 9700.
