Applications

This premium exit device is built for high impact applications such as schools, universities and other institutional or commercial buildings.

DORMA Solutions

All standard devices and trim are designed for 1-3/4”- 2-1/4” thick doors. For door thickness greater than 2-1/4”, consult DORMA Technical Service.

Motorized Latch Retraction

The MLR feature retracts the latch using a whisper quiet motor, drawing in the touch bar, thus retracting the latch. The device can be activated by a variety of credentials and also has the ability to electrically hold/dog the exit push bar in a retracted position during non-secure hours.

Dormakaba F9700AA 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I dog down the DORMA F9700AA exit device to leave the door push-open during the day?
No. The F9700AA is the fire rated version of the 9700, and dogging is not permitted on fire rated models. Hex key dogging is standard only on the panic (non-fire) models, and cylinder dogging (CD) is likewise a panic-model option. If you need a dogged, push-open door during business hours, you need a non-fire rated rim device on a non-rated opening, or the motorized latch retraction (MLR) option, which can electrically hold the touch bar retracted during non-secure hours.
2) Will the DORMA 9700 rim device fit a wood door?
No. The 9700 narrow stile rim device is not rated for wood doors, so it is for hollow metal and aluminum openings only. If the opening is a wood fire door, look at the Adams Rite 3700 Series narrow stile rim device, which we hold as fire rated and wood door compatible.
3) What door thickness does the DORMA F9700AA work on?
Standard devices and trim in the 9000 Series cover doors from 1-3/4 inches to 2-1/4 inches thick, which takes in standard commercial 1-3/4 inch metal doors as well as thicker thermal and storefront leaves. Doors over 2-1/4 inches need DORMA Technical Service involvement rather than the standard device.
4) Does this 48 inch exit device come with a strike, or do I order one separately?
A strike is included. Panic models ship with the 430 strike; because the F9700AA is fire rated, it comes with the 463 rim strike as standard. Fasteners are included too: wood and machine screws are standard, and sex nuts and bolts (SNB) come standard on fire rated and hurricane devices, which is what a fire rated metal door usually requires for through-bolting.
5) Can I use this rim device on a pair of doors?
Yes, with a removable mullion. Both leaves get rim exit devices and normally operate as single doors; the mullion comes out when a full-width opening is needed. Steel and aluminum mullions are offered in 8 foot and 10 foot lengths. If you cannot accept a mullion in the opening, a rim device is the wrong type and you want vertical rod hardware instead, such as the Hager 4601 narrow stile concealed vertical rod device.
6) Does this device accept lever trim for outside entry?
Not as configured. The F9700AA is exit only, meaning there is no outside trim or cylinder, so the door is push-to-exit and locked from outside with no key access. The 9000 Series does offer free wheeling lever trim in a range of architectural finishes, but you have to order a trim-prepped device. For a narrow stile rim device that accepts trim from another line, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 is listed as exit only, accepts trim.
7) Does the narrow stile 9700 fit an aluminum storefront door, or do I need a wide stile device?
Narrow stile is the correct choice for aluminum storefront and glass doors, where the vertical stile is too slim to take a wide stile chassis. The 9700 is the narrow stile model in the 9000 Series. On hollow metal doors with a full-width face, a wide stile device such as the Corbin Russwin ED5200 or TownSteel ED9700 is the usual fit instead.
8) Can I use the Adams Rite 8800 in place of the DORMA F9700AA on a fire door?
No. The Adams Rite 8800 Series narrow stile rim device is listed with a fire rating of No, so it is not an option on a labeled opening. It matches the DORMA F9700AA on Grade 1, narrow stile, and a 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range, which makes it a reasonable peer on a non-labeled aluminum door only. For the fire door, stay with the fire rated F9700AA.
9) If I need dogging on a 48 inch device, is the DORMA F9700AA the right pick?
No - fire rated models in the DORMA 9000 Series carry no dogging, because a labeled door cannot be held unlatched mechanically. Hex key dogging is standard on the non-fire panic models instead. If the opening is not labeled and you want dogging at 48 inches, the Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48 inch push bar rim device listed with a fire rating of No, and the Design Hardware 1000R is a 33 inch heavy duty rim device with hex key dogging.
10) Is the 48 inch size for a 48 inch wide door, and is it handed?
The F9700AA is the 48 inch device size, sized for wide single leaves, and it is non-handed, so one device covers left and right hand openings. That matters for a property manager stocking spares: a single part number serves both swings across a building.
11) Is the DORMA 9700 a Grade 1 device, and is it right for a school or high-traffic exit?
Grade 1, heavy duty, and built on a cast chassis for high impact use such as schools, universities and other institutional buildings. It is a commercial device, not residential. The touch bar has reduced projection to cut down on catch hazards in corridors and stairwells.
12) What options should I specify for an exterior fire door in a coastal or healthcare building?
Five option suffixes are available on the 9700: AM antimicrobial coating (worth specifying for healthcare and high-touch corridors), SNB sex nuts, TX security screws, HC hurricane (which includes SNB), and BF barrier free for a maximum 5 lb operating force to meet CBC. For a coastal exterior opening, HC is the one that matters; for accessibility-driven push force limits, specify BF.
13) I need card access to release this exit device. What do I order?
Specify the motorized latch retraction (MLR) version. MLR uses a quiet motor to draw in the touch bar and retract the latch, and it can be triggered by a range of credentials, so it works with a card reader or other access control front end. It also gives you electric dogging, holding the bar retracted during non-secure hours, which is the only way to get that behaviour on a fire rated 9700 since mechanical dogging is not allowed on fire rated devices.
14) What other fire rated rim exit devices could I use instead of the DORMA F9700AA?
Among fire rated rim devices we carry, the Marks USA M9900F comes in the same 48 inch length, exit only, with a panic protector end cap. The Dexter ED1000 Series fire rated rim device is a Grade 1 exit only alternative, and Orca Hardware OED85 is a 36 inch fire rated option. Note that the DORMA 9700 is narrow stile, which is what you need on aluminum storefront; the Adams Rite 3700 Series is the narrow stile fire rated peer and is also rated for wood doors.
15) What narrow stile alternatives to the DORMA F9700AA are there for a non-labeled aluminum storefront door?
On an unlabeled opening you have more room to choose. Narrow stile Grade 1 rim devices include the Corbin Russwin ED4200 at 36 inches, the Falcon 1590EO at 42 inches, the TownSteel ED3700 and ED8900 at 36 inches, and the Detex 40 Advantex in an extra heavy duty build. None of those is listed as fire rated, which is the reason to hold the DORMA F9700AA on any labeled door. The F9700AA also fits doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick, while the Corbin ED4200 and Falcon 1590EO are listed at 1-3/4 inch.
16) How does the DORMA F9700AA compare to the Cal-Royal A9820 for a 48 inch door?
Both are 48 inch heavy duty rim exit devices in an exit only function. The split is the label: the DORMA F9700AA is fire rated and certified Grade 1, while the Cal-Royal A9820 is listed with a fire rating of No and a Grade 2 chassis. The DORMA is also a narrow stile device, which matters if you are working an aluminum storefront stile rather than a hollow metal leaf.
17) Is a Securitron EMB or SDC pressure sense bar a substitute for the DORMA F9700AA?
They are not interchangeable. The Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar and the SDC SureExit PSB560 is a pressure sense bar that releases a separate lock - neither is a latching rim exit device with its own strike. The DORMA F9700AA is a mechanical fire rated rim device that ships with a 463 rim strike on fire rated builds. If a labeled door needs a latching panic device, the F9700AA is the correct family; the SDC PSB560 is listed with a fire rating of No.
18) The Sargent 12-8810 is fire rated - can it replace the DORMA F9700AA?
Not on an opening that needs to latch. The Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is listed with a dummy function, so it provides no latching, and it is a wide stile device. The DORMA F9700AA is a narrow stile fire rated panic rim device in an exit only function with a rim strike. Use the Sargent only where the leaf is intentionally non-latching and matching the active device's appearance is the goal.
19) What fire rated rim device should I look at if my doors vary in thickness?
The DORMA F9700AA is the more forgiving of the fire rated options on thickness: it covers doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Among fire rated peers, the Arrow FS1250 is listed at 1-3/4 inch only. For a mixed-thickness fleet of labeled aluminum doors, standardizing on the DORMA 9700 narrow stile device keeps one part number across the range.
20) Dexter ED1000 fire rated versus DORMA F9700AA - which suits an aluminum storefront?
The Dexter ED1000-R-F-EO is a Grade 1 fire rated rim exit device and the DORMA F9700AA is a Grade 1 fire rated rim device as well, so both clear a labeled opening. The deciding detail is stile: the DORMA 9700 is specified narrow stile for slim aluminum storefront rails, and it is offered at 48 inches. Both are listed as not wood door compatible.
21) What finishes does the DORMA 9700 narrow stile rim device come in?
Fifteen finishes, spanning architectural plated and powder coated: 605 bright brass, 606 and 696 satin brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, 689 aluminum, 691 light bronze, 693 black and 695 dark bronze. For storefront work, 689 aluminum and 695 dark bronze are the two that normally match existing anodized frames.
