Motorized Latch Retraction

Dormakaba 9700CC 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the DORMA 9700CC rim exit device work on an aluminum storefront door with a narrow stile?
That is exactly what the 9700CC is built for. It is the narrow stile version of the DORMA 9000 Series rim device, sized 30 inches, with a heavy duty cast chassis and a reduced projection touchbar. It is not rated for wood doors, so keep it on metal or aluminum openings.
2) What door thickness does the DORMA 9000 Series exit device fit?
Standard devices and trim cover 1-3/4 inch through 2-1/4 inch doors, which takes in the usual 1-3/4 inch commercial leaf and thicker thermally broken or hurricane storefront doors. Anything over 2-1/4 inches needs to go back to DORMA Technical Service.
3) Do I need to order the DORMA 9700CC left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. The 9700CC is non-handed, so one device covers either swing on your order.
4) Can I put outside lever trim on the DORMA 9700CC, or is it push-to-exit only?
As configured it is exit only, meaning no outside trim, no key retraction from the pull side. Push the bar and go. If the opening needs outside entry, you want a trim-accepting rim device instead, such as the Corbin Russwin ED4200 narrow stile rim, which is listed exit only or with trim.
5) How do I dog the DORMA 9700 exit device open during business hours?
Dogging is an ordering choice. You can take CD cylinder dogging, which comes with a cylinder in the SC keyway keyed different to a random combination, or LD less dogging if the device is going somewhere dogging is not wanted. There is also motorized latch retraction (MLR) on the 9000 Series, which electrically holds the touchbar retracted during non-secure hours and can be released by access control credentials.
6) How do I secure a pair of doors with rim exit devices and still get a full clear opening?
Use a removable mullion. Both leaves get rim devices and latch to the mullion, so they work as single doors day to day, and the mullion pulls out when you need the full width for moving equipment. DORMA offers steel and aluminum mullions in 8 foot and 10 foot lengths. If you can never have anything in the middle of the opening, a vertical rod device is the other route.
7) The DORMA 9700 is not fire rated. What rim exit device should I use on a fire rated opening instead?
The 9700 is listed with a fire rating of No, so it is not the device for a labeled opening. Fire rated rim devices in the same class include the Adams Rite 3700 Series in 30 inch, a Grade 1 fire rated narrow stile rim device, which is the closest match if the opening is narrow stile and 30 inch. For wider stile fire rated openings, the Dexter ED1000-R-F, a Grade 1 fire rated rim device, the Marks USA M9900F in 36 inch and 48 inch, the Arrow FS1250 in 32 inch, and the Orca OED85 in 36 inch are all fire rated rim devices.
8) What is the closest narrow stile Grade 1 rim exit device to the DORMA 9700CC if I need another brand?
The DORMA 9700 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device rated heavy duty and set up exit only. The closest cross-brand matches on those same attributes are the TownSteel ED8900 and ED3700, both Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile rim devices in 36 inch, and the Corbin Russwin ED4200, a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device in 36 inch. The Falcon 19-R in 36 inch and the Falcon 1590EO in 42 inch are also Grade 1 narrow stile rim devices listed exit only. All of those peers are 36 inch or longer, while the DORMA 9700CC covered here is the 30 inch device size.
9) Which other narrow stile rim device matches the DORMA 9700 door thickness range of 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch?
The DORMA 9700 is built for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors. The Adams Rite 8800 Series in 30 inch lists the same 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch range and is likewise a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device not rated for wood doors. Several other narrow stile peers are listed for 1-3/4 inch only, including the Corbin Russwin ED4200, the Falcon 19-R, and the Falcon 1790EO, so those will not cover a thicker aluminum or insulated door.
10) The DORMA 9700 is exit only. What should I order if the outside needs a key or lever to get in?
The 9700 configuration here is exit only, with no outside trim. If the opening needs outside access, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 narrow stile Grade 1 device is listed exit only or accepts trim, and the wide stile Corbin Russwin ED5200 is the same way. For keyed outside entry on a narrow device, the Sargent 8504 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device in night latch function, and the Detex V4003A/03AN is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device supplied with night latch trim.
11) Is an SDC switch bar or pressure sense bar a substitute for the DORMA 9700 rim exit device?
They are not the same thing. The DORMA 9700 is a Grade 1 mechanical rim exit device with its own latch, working against a 430 rim strike. The SDC MSB550 in 36 inch is a mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock, and the SDC PSB560 SureExit in 36 inch is a pressure sense bar; both fit narrow or wide stile doors but depend on a separate locking device rather than latching the door themselves. The SDC S6136 Spectra is an electrified rim exit device but in a 4 inch wide stile format for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar.
12) What strike comes with the DORMA 9000 Series rim device?
The 430 strike ships standard. Fire rated and hurricane rated versions of the series come with the 463 rim strike instead. If you are replacing an existing rim device, plan on installing the supplied strike rather than reusing the old one, since rim strike geometry varies by manufacturer.
13) Is the DORMA 9700CC strong enough for a high school or university exterior door?
It is aimed squarely at that. Grade 1, heavy duty cast chassis, and the series is marketed for high impact applications like schools, universities and other institutional buildings. The reduced projection touchbar also cuts down on catch hazards in busy corridors.
14) What fasteners ship with the DORMA 9000 exit device, and do I need sex nuts?
Wood and machine screws are the standard pack. Sex nut and bolt hardware is standard only on fire rated and hurricane devices; on a standard 9700CC you would add the SNB option if your spec or a mineral core door calls for through-bolting.
15) I have a narrow stile door but my existing device is an Adams Rite. Is the DORMA 9700CC a straight swap?
Treat it as a new install, not a drop-in. Both are narrow stile Grade 1 rim devices, and the Adams Rite 8800 Series 30 inch shares the same 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range, but prep and strike locations differ between brands and the DORMA ships its own 430 strike. If you want to keep the existing Adams Rite prep, the Adams Rite 8800 or 8700 at 30 inches is the closer match.
16) My opening is a wide stile hollow metal door, not a narrow stile storefront. What takes the place of the DORMA 9700 there?
The 9700 covered here is the narrow stile version, sized for narrow aluminum stiles. On a wide stile door, Grade 1 wide stile rim devices include the Von Duprin 22 in 36 inch, the Corbin Russwin ED5200 in 36 inch and ED2200 in 36 inch, the TownSteel ED1100 in 36 inch and ED9700 in 36 inch, and the Detex 10 Advantex in 36 inch, which is rated extra heavy duty. All are non fire rated rim devices like the DORMA 9700.
17) Is the Cal-Royal A9800 an equal substitute for the DORMA 9700 exit device?
They are not equal on grade. The DORMA 9700 is a Grade 1 heavy duty device; the Cal-Royal A9800 in 36 inch and A9820 in 48 inch are heavy duty but carry a Grade 2 rating, as does the Cal-Royal 5000 in 36 inch and 5500 in 48 inch. If the specification calls for ANSI Grade 1, stay with a Grade 1 peer such as the TownSteel ED8900 narrow stile or the Corbin Russwin ED4200.
18) Is a crossbar device like the CRL Jackson 1095 interchangeable with the DORMA 9700 touchbar?
No. The DORMA 9700 uses a reduced projection touchbar on a narrow stile chassis in 30 inch. The CRL Jackson 1095 in 48 inch is a crossbar rim panic device for wide stile doors, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 in 48 inch is also a wide stile crossbar rim device. Crossbar devices mount differently and suit a wider door leaf, so they are not a drop in for a 30 inch narrow stile opening. If you want a push pad in that family instead, the CRL Jackson 1295 is a non handed push pad rim device for wide stile 1-3/4 inch doors.
19) The DORMA 9700 is a rim device. What if my drawings call for concealed vertical rod instead?
The 9700 is a rim exit device, latching into a strike on the frame or mullion. If the opening is specified for concealed vertical rod, the Hager 4601 Series in 36 inch is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod device in narrow stile, and the Hager 4501 Series in 36 inch is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod device with a wide stile pushpad. Both are non fire rated.
20) Is there a non-handed alternative to the DORMA 9700 so I can stock one device for both leaves?
The DORMA 9700 is already non-handed, so a single device serves either hand. Peers with the same property include the BEST 2401 Series narrow stile rim device, listed exit only and non-handed, the BEST Precision 5101 Series non-handed universal rim device, the Von Duprin 22 in 36 inch, listed non-handed Grade 1 wide stile, and the reversible Sargent 2828 and 3828 Grade 1 rim devices for 48 inch minimum door width.
21) The DORMA 9700 offers cylinder dogging. Which comparable devices use hex key dogging instead?
The DORMA 9700 can be ordered less dogging or with cylinder dogging using a cylinder in the SC keyway keyed different. If your maintenance staff prefers a hex key rather than managing a dogging cylinder, the Stanley Security QED200 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile rim device with hex-key dogging, and the Design Hardware 1000R in 33 inch is a heavy duty rim device with hex key dogging.
22) What finishes does the DORMA 9700CC narrow stile exit device come in?
Fifteen, covering both architectural and powder coated: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, 689 aluminum, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze and 696 satin brass. 689 aluminum and 695 dark bronze are the two that usually match existing storefront.
