1) Is the DORMA 9300 fire rated for a labeled opening?
No. The 9300 is a panic device, not a fire exit device, so it cannot go on a labeled fire door. For a fire rated rim device at 48 inches, the Marks USA M9900F is offered in a 48 inch fire rated version; Dexter's ED1000 rim device also comes in a Grade 1 fire rated variant.
2) How do I secure a pair of doors with DORMA 9300 rim devices and still get a full clear opening?
Rim devices latch into a strike on the frame or on a mullion, so a pair gets one 9300 on each leaf with a removable mullion between them. Day to day the doors work as singles; pull the mullion when you need the full width for moving equipment or furniture. Steel and aluminum mullions come in 8 foot and 10 foot lengths. If you never want a mullion in the opening, a vertical rod device is the type to look at instead, like the Hager 4501 concealed vertical rod device.
3) Does the DORMA 9300 exit device need to be ordered handed?
No handing to specify. The 9300 is non-handed, so one device covers a left hand or right hand opening and a stocked spare fits any door in the building. That matters for a property manager keeping one part on the shelf across a fleet of doors.
