Dorma 8300/F8300 Grade 1 Rim Exit Device, Wide Stile Pushpad, Non-Handed

The 8000 Series exit devices with deadlocking latch bolts minimize forced entry while offering a low-cost solution to security and life safety requirements. The touchbar, rail assembly and integral parts are constructed of solid steel. Devices are available for labeled and non-labeled openings.

For paired doors where a full-width opening is only occasionally required, removable mullions are used. Doors are fitted with rim exit devices and normally function as single doors. Steel and aluminum mullions are available in 8' or 10' lengths.

Available Finishes

The devices are offered in an array of standard architectural finishes. A split finish with a stainless steel touchbar and powder coated rail is also available.

Economical and reliable exit device

Rim, surface vertical rod, and surface vertical rod ''less bottom rod,'' along with a full range of trim options which allow access from the secure side of an opening, make the 8000 Series the perfect choice when an economical and reliable exit device is required.

Dormakaba 8300A 689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the DORMA 8300 48-inch rim exit device fit a 2-inch thick hollow metal door?
Yes. The 8300 rim device is built for standard 1-3/4 inch through 2-1/4 inch thick doors, so a 2 inch metal door is within range. One caveat before you order: it is not rated for wood doors, so keep it on hollow metal or aluminum openings.
2) Does the 48-inch size mean the door has to be 48 inches wide?
The 48 inch designation is Dorma's Size A device length, covering the widest openings in the 8000 Series lineup. Dorma also builds the same device as Size B at 36 inches and Size C at 30 inches. Match the device size to the door leaf width, not to the frame opening, and trim the rail per Dorma's instructions if the leaf falls between sizes.
3) Do I need to order a lever or pull separately with the DORMA 8300?
Yes. The 8300 ships exit only, meaning push the bar and get out, with no outside operation at all. If you need access from the secure side, Dorma outside trim is a separate line item. The 8000 Series has a full trim range for that. Skip the trim and you have a door that can only be opened from the inside.
4) Which strike do I pick for a DORMA 8300 rim device?
Strike choice is required on the 8300, and there are four. The 463 standard rim strike is the default for a typical hollow metal frame. The 430 rim box strike suits frames where you want a closed housing around the keeper. The 320 overlap strike is used when the door overlaps the frame stop rather than sitting flush inside it. The 486 roller strike reduces drag on doors that need a softer close or have slight alignment issues. Measure the frame stop and the door-to-frame relationship before you commit.
5) Can I use two DORMA 8300 rim devices on a pair of doors?
Yes, with a removable mullion between them. Rim devices latch into a strike on the frame or mullion, so on a pair you fit both leaves with 8300 devices and add a removable mullion that acts as the strike point. Day to day the doors work as singles; pull the mullion when you need the full clear opening for moving equipment. Dorma offers steel and aluminum mullions in 8 foot and 10 foot lengths. If you cannot have a mullion at all, you want a surface vertical rod device instead, which the 8000 Series also covers.
6) How do I keep a DORMA 8300 door unlocked during business hours?
Out of the box the 8300 uses hex key dogging: insert the hex wrench, hold the pushbar depressed, and the latch stays retracted so the door pushes free. If you would rather control that with a key, order the CD option, which adds cylinder dogging with an SC keyway cylinder keyed different to a random combination. You can also order LD, less dogging, if you want no dogging at all.
7) I need a fire rated rim exit device instead of the DORMA 8300 - what should I order?
The 8300 as configured is not fire rated; DORMA covers labeled openings with the F8300 variant, rated 3 hour. If you want a fire rated rim device from another maker, the Marks USA M9900F is offered in both 36 inch and 48 inch fire rated exit only versions, the Dexter ED1000-R-F-EO is a Grade 1 fire rated rim device, and the Orca OED85 is a 36 inch fire rated rim device. Fire rated openings also rule out dogging, so do not carry the hex key or cylinder dogging option over to a labeled door.
8) The DORMA 8300 is wide stile - what rim device do I use on a narrow stile aluminum storefront?
The 8300 is built for wide stile doors, so on a narrow stile aluminum frame you want a narrow stile rim device. Grade 1 narrow stile options include the Corbin Russwin ED4200, the TownSteel ED3700 and ED8900, the Falcon 19-R exit only, and the Adams Rite 8800, which lists a 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range like the 8300 covers. The Adams Rite 3700 is the narrow stile choice when the opening is also fire rated.
9) What is the closest wide stile Grade 1 rim exit device to the DORMA 8300 for a 48 inch door?
For a 48 inch opening, the Sargent 2828 and Sargent 3828 are both Grade 1 wide stile rim devices in exit only function sized for 48 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48 inch wide rim device with a push bar. The DORMA 8300 in Size A covers the same 48 inch width as a Grade 1 wide stile pushpad device, non-handed, exit only with trim sold separately. The Sargent 2828 and 3828 differ in bar style between the 20 Series and 30 Series push bar, and the Cal-Royal 5500 is a Grade 2 chassis, so match the grade requirement on your spec before swapping.
10) How does the DORMA 8300 compare to the Von Duprin 22 rim device?
Both are Grade 1 non-handed wide stile pushpad rim exit devices. The Von Duprin 22-3FT is a 36 inch device listed for 1-3/4 inch doors, while the DORMA 8300 in Size A is a 48 inch device fitting 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors, with hex key dogging standard and cylinder dogging offered as an option. If you are matching an existing 36 inch opening, the 8300 is also built in Size B at 36 inches and Size C at 30 inches.
11) Does the DORMA 8300 exit device need to be handed?
No. The 8300 is non-handed, so the same device works on a left or right hand opening. That matters for a property manager stocking spares: one part number covers every door in the building rather than two.
12) Can the DORMA 8300 be tied into an access control system?
Yes, order the ES option for electric latch retraction. That lets a card reader or push button pull the latch back so the door opens without touching the bar, while the pushbar still gives free egress if power drops. Plan for power supply and door cord at the frame, since ES is an electrified device and neither is part of the device itself.
13) What options should I add on a DORMA 8300 for a school, a coastal building, or an ADA opening?
Five add-ons are available. TX gives security screws for high-abuse or vandal-prone openings. SNB sex nuts for through-bolting, included automatically with the F and H options. HC is the hurricane configuration and includes SNB, for wind-borne debris regions. BF is the barrier free version for reduced operating force. Choose based on the environment: TX for schools and transit, HC for coastal, BF where accessibility governs.
14) What are the alternatives to a DORMA 8300 48-inch wide stile rim device from other brands?
Several Grade 1 wide stile rim devices cover the same territory. The Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a 48 inch crossbar device for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Sargent 3828 is a reversible push bar rim device for 48 inch doors. For a 48 inch pushpad device the Cal-Royal 5500 is a push bar option, though it is Grade 2 rather than Grade 1. If the opening is fire rated, the Marks USA M9900F 48 inch is an exit only fire rated rim device. In pushpad style at shorter widths, the Von Duprin 22 Series and the TownSteel ED1100 are both Grade 1 wide stile.
15) Is the DORMA 8300 heavy enough for a high traffic entrance?
It is a Grade 1 device, the top ANSI/BHMA durability classification for exit hardware, and the touchbar, rail assembly and internal parts are solid steel. The deadlocking latchbolt resists being carded or forced. End caps are ABS thermoplastic, so replace those if a cart takes one out rather than assuming the whole device is done.
16) Is there a lighter duty or lower grade alternative to the DORMA 8300 for a low traffic exit?
The 8300 is a Grade 1 device with a solid steel touchbar and rail. If the opening does not need Grade 1, the Cal-Royal 5000 and Cal-Royal 5500 are Grade 2 heavy duty rim devices, and the Design Hardware 2000R is a standard duty wide stile rim device with hex key dogging, the same dogging style the 8300 uses. The Hager 4701 is a standard duty rim device that still carries a Grade 1 BHMA listing if you need the grade but a lighter chassis.
17) I want a crossbar instead of the DORMA 8300 pushpad - what are my options?
The 8300 uses a touchbar pushpad across the rail. If the building standard calls for a crossbar look, the CRL Jackson 1095 is a 48 inch crossbar rim panic device in wide stile, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a Grade 1 48 inch crossbar rim device for wide stile doors with a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. Both are the same 48 inch width class as the 8300 Size A, so the door itself does not change.
18) Can I use an SDC pressure sense bar or switch bar in place of the DORMA 8300?
Not as a direct swap. The DORMA 8300 is a mechanical rim exit device with deadlocking latch bolts that latch into a rim strike. The SDC PSB560 pressure sense bar and the SDC MSB550 mechanical switch bar release an electromagnetic lock rather than throwing their own latch, so the opening needs a maglock and power to work at all. Use them where an access control maglock is already the locking method; use the 8300 where the door latches mechanically.
19) If I need electric latch retraction, is the DORMA 8300 the right device or should I look at a factory electrified model?
The 8300 can be ordered with the ES electric latch retraction option, which keeps the same Grade 1 wide stile rim platform. If you would rather use a device built around electrification, the SDC S6136 Spectra is an electrified architectural rim exit device with a 4 inch wide stile for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the Sargent 12-8810 is a fire rated wide stile rim device with request to exit and motorized electric latch retraction. Note the S6136 tops out at 2 inch door thickness where the 8300 goes to 2-1/4 inch.
20) The DORMA 8300 is exit only - what should I order if I need outside trim with a night latch function?
The 8300 ships exit only with DORMA outside trim ordered separately, so trim is an add-on rather than part of the device. If you want a device that comes as a trim package, the Detex V4003A/03AN is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device supplied with night latch trim, and the Sargent 8504 is a Grade 1 night latch function rim device in a narrow design. Choose by stile: the Detex stays wide stile like the 8300, the Sargent 8504 is narrow.
21) What finishes does the DORMA 8300 rim exit device come in?
Five: 689 anodized aluminum, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. If you are matching storefront that is already dark bronze, 695 is your match; 689 aluminum is the usual pairing with clear anodized aluminum entrances. A split finish with a stainless touchbar over a powder coated rail is also part of the 8000 Series offering.
22) Is the Detex 00 Series a substitute for the DORMA 8300?
No. The Detex Advantex 00 Series is a dummy exit device in a wide stile design - it gives the look and push motion of a panic bar without a latching mechanism. The DORMA 8300 is a working Grade 1 panic rim device with deadlocking latch bolts and a rim strike. Use the Detex 00 only on an inactive leaf or an opening that needs the appearance matched, not where the door must actually latch.
