Dorma 8300/F8300 Grade 1 Rim Exit Device, Wide Stile Pushpad, Non-Handed

The 8000 Series exit devices with deadlocking latch bolts minimize forced entry while offering a low-cost solution to security and life safety requirements. The touchbar, rail assembly and integral parts are constructed of solid steel. Devices are available for labeled and non-labeled openings.

For paired doors where a full-width opening is only occasionally required, removable mullions are used. Doors are fitted with rim exit devices and normally function as single doors. Steel and aluminum mullions are available in 8' or 10' lengths.

Available Finishes

The devices are offered in an array of standard architectural finishes. A split finish with a stainless steel touchbar and powder coated rail is also available.

Economical and reliable exit device

Rim, surface vertical rod, and surface vertical rod ''less bottom rod,'' along with a full range of trim options which allow access from the secure side of an opening, make the 8000 Series the perfect choice when an economical and reliable exit device is required.

Dormakaba 8300B 689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the DORMA 8300 rim exit device fit a 2-inch thick hollow metal door?
Yes. The 8300 fits standard doors from 1-3/4 inches through 2-1/4 inches thick, so a 2 inch leaf is inside the range. One caveat that trips people up: it is not rated for wood doors, so keep it on metal or aluminum openings.
2) Is the DORMA 8300 exit device fire rated for a stairwell door?
No. The 8300 is the non-rated version and cannot go on a labeled opening. DORMA builds the same device as the F8300 with a 3 hour fire rating for labeled doors, so that is the model to specify for a stair or corridor door that carries a label. Another route is a rated device from another line we carry, such as the Marks USA M9900F in 36 inch or the Orca OED85 Series 36 inch, both fire rated rim devices.
3) Does the DORMA 8300 come with outside trim, or do I need a lever to get back in?
Exit only as supplied. The 8300 pushes out and latches behind you, with no outside operation at all. If people need to get back in from the secure side, DORMA outside exit device trim is ordered separately, and the 8000 Series carries a full range of trim options to do it.
4) Which strike do I order with the DORMA 8300 rim device?
Strike is a required choice, and the 416 strike is the standard one. The dropdown also carries the 463 standard rim strike, the 430 rim box strike, the 320 overlap strike, and the 486 roller strike. Pick from the frame condition: box strike where the frame face needs the pocket, overlap where the door and frame overlap, roller where a rolling latch action helps.
5) Can the DORMA 8300 be dogged down to hold the door push-open during business hours?
Yes. Hex key dogging is the standard arrangement, so a hex wrench holds the pushpad depressed and the latch retracted while the building is open. Cylinder dogging is orderable instead (CD, supplied with a cylinder in SC keyway, keyed different to a random combination), which is what you want when you do not want a hex key floating around the building. There is also an LD less dogging option if the door must latch at all times.
6) How do I secure a pair of doors with DORMA 8300 rim devices and still get a full-width opening when I need it?
Fit both leaves with rim devices and use a removable mullion. Day to day the pair works as two single doors, each latching into the mullion, and the mullion pulls out when you need the full clear opening for moving furniture or equipment. DORMA offers steel and aluminum mullions in 8 foot and 10 foot lengths, so match the length to your frame height.
7) I need a wide stile 36 inch rim exit device. What else is there besides the DORMA 8300?
Several straight equivalents. The Von Duprin 22-3FT is a 36 inch non-handed wide stile pushpad rim device, Grade 1, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Corbin Russwin ED2200 is a 36 inch Grade 1 wide stile exit only device, and the ED5200 is the same size and grade but accepts trim. TownSteel ED1100 and ED9700 are both 36 inch Grade 1 heavy duty wide stile rim devices, as is the BEST Precision 2101 at 36 inches. Note the Von Duprin 22 is a single 1-3/4 inch thickness, where the 8300 covers up to 2-1/4 inches.
8) The door is an aluminum storefront with a narrow stile. Will the 8300 fit, and what should be used instead?
The 8300 is a wide stile device and needs the stile width to take a wide stile pushpad rail. For a narrow stile leaf, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 is a 36 inch Grade 1 narrow stile rim device, TownSteel's ED3700 and ED8900 are both 36 inch Grade 1 narrow stile rim devices, and Adams Rite's 8800 is a narrow stile Grade 1 rim device covering 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, the same thickness band the 8300 fits. The Falcon 19-R is another narrow stile Grade 1 exit only device at 36 inches.
9) The opening needs a fire rated rim device, not a panic device. What replaces the 8300?
The 8300 as configured carries no fire rating, so a labeled opening needs a device built for it. The Marks USA M9900F is a fire rated 36 inch rim exit device in exit only trim, matching the 8300's 36 inch size and exit only configuration, and the same M9900F is offered in 48 inch for wider leaves. Orca Hardware's OED85 is a 36 inch fire rated rim device, also exit only. Dexter's ED1000 series has a Grade 1 fire rated rim version, which keeps the Grade 1 level the 8300 carries. Adams Rite's 3700 is a fire rated Grade 1 rim device, but in a 30 inch narrow stile build for a different door.
10) Which exit bars look like a substitute for the 8300 but are not panic hardware?
Two SDC bars sit next to rim exit devices and behave differently. The MSB550 is a 36 inch mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock, and the PSB560 SureExit is a 36 inch pressure sense bar with tri-failsafe technology; both are switching bars offered for narrow or wide stile doors rather than latching rim devices. The Detex Advantex 00 Series is a wide stile dummy exit device with no latching function, and Sargent's 12-8810-LTRIM is listed in a dummy function. The Dexter ED1500-EXTRD-SP is a 12 inch extension rod assembly for ED1500 devices, a component and not a device. The 8300 is a latching rim device with a deadlocking latch bolt.
11) The opening is a 48 inch leaf. What rim exit devices cover that width if the 36 inch 8300 is too short?
The 8300 is built in a 36 inch size. For a 48 inch leaf, the Dexter ED1000 comes in a 4FT Grade 1 rim version, the Marks USA M9900F is offered as a 48 inch fire rated rim panic device in exit only, and the CRL Jackson 1095 is a 48 inch crossbar rim panic device. Sargent's 2828 is a Grade 1 reversible wide stile rim device for a 48 inch minimum door width, exit only like the 8300.
12) The opening needs a vertical rod device rather than a rim device. What replaces the 8300 on a pair without a mullion?
The 8300 is a rim device, which on a pair of doors is used with a removable mullion. Where a mullion cannot be used, the Hager 4501 is a 36 inch Grade 1 concealed vertical rod exit device with a wide stile pushpad, matching the 8300's 36 inch wide stile pushpad format, and the Hager 4601 is the 36 inch Grade 1 concealed vertical rod device for narrow stile leaves.
13) The 8300 fits doors up to 2-1/4 inches. Which comparable devices are limited to 1-3/4 inch doors?
The 8300 fits standard 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick doors. Several comparable rim devices list 1-3/4 inch only: the Arrow 3880 and Arrow 4800, the Arrow ED910 at 36 inches, the Arrow FS1250 fire rated 32 inch device, the Corbin Russwin ED3200 and ED5200, the Falcon 1590EO and 1790EO, and the CRL Jackson 1295. The SDC S6136 covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Adams Rite 8800 covers the same 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch band as the 8300. On a thick door this is the spec that decides the order.
14) What size door does the 36 inch DORMA 8300 cover, and what do I order for a wider or narrower leaf?
The 36 inch device is DORMA's Size B. The 8000 Series also comes as Size C at 30 inches and Size A at 48 inches, so measure the door leaf and pick the size that suits rather than cutting the rail down.
15) Can I get the DORMA 8300 with electric latch retraction for an access control system?
Yes, ES electric latch retraction is an orderable option on the 8300. That lets a card reader or push button pull the latch back so the door opens freely from outside without touching the pushpad. If you would rather use an exit bar built around switching from the start, the SDC S6136 Spectra is an electrified rim exit device in 36 inch for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the SDC MSB550 Series 36 inch is a mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock.
16) Is there a hurricane rated configuration of the DORMA 8300, and what comes with it?
There is a hurricane option (HC) on the 8300, and it includes SNB sex nuts, the through-bolt fasteners that tie the device through the door rather than relying on screws in the door skin. Each of the finishes is orderable either standard or as the hurricane build. TX security screws are a separate option if tamper resistance is the concern rather than wind load.
17) Is the DORMA 8300 heavy duty enough for a school or apartment building exit door?
It is a Grade 1 commercial device with a solid steel touchbar, rail assembly and internal parts, and a deadlocking latch bolt that resists being carded or forced. Grade 1 is the top ANSI/BHMA durability tier for exit hardware, which is the level normally specified for institutional and multi-family traffic. The end caps are ABS thermoplastic rather than metal.
18) Does the DORMA 8300 need handing when I order it?
No handing to specify. The 8300 is non-handed, so one device covers a left or right hand door and you do not need to work out the swing before ordering. That also makes it simpler to stock one part across a building.
19) What is the ADA compliant version of the DORMA 8300 exit device?
Order the BF barrier free option. That is the configuration to specify when the opening has to serve users who cannot manage a standard pushpad effort. The pushpad style itself already helps here, since it operates anywhere along the bar rather than needing a grip.
20) Should I use a rim exit device or a vertical rod device on my exit door?
A rim device like the 8300 latches into a strike on the frame or a mullion at the lock edge, which is the simplest and lowest cost arrangement for a single door. Vertical rod devices latch at the head and threshold instead, which is what you need on a pair with no mullion. The 8000 Series is also built as a surface vertical rod and as a surface vertical rod less bottom rod, that last one being the version to use where a bottom rod would drag in dirt or get damaged. If you want the rods hidden inside the door, that is a concealed vertical rod device instead, such as the Hager 4501 Series in 36 inch.
21) Is there a lighter duty rim exit device than the DORMA 8300 for a low traffic door?
The 8300 is a Grade 1 device. If the opening does not call for Grade 1, the Cal-Royal 5000 is a 36 inch wide rim exit device with a Grade 2 heavy duty chassis, and the Cal-Royal 5500 is the same Grade 2 heavy duty build in a 48 inch push bar version. Design Hardware's 2000R is a standard duty wide stile rim device with hex key dogging in a 33 inch length, and its 1000R is the heavy duty version of the same, also hex key dogged like the 8300. Hager's 4701 is a standard duty rim device at 36 inches that still carries Grade 1 BHMA certification.
22) What is the heavier duty alternative to the 8300 for a high abuse opening like a school or stadium exit?
For traffic beyond what a standard Grade 1 rim device sees, the Detex 10 Advantex is a 36 inch wide stile Grade 1 rim exit device rated extra heavy duty, matching the 8300's 36 inch wide stile Grade 1 configuration at a higher duty level. The Detex 40 Advantex is the extra heavy duty narrow stile version for storefront leaves. Detex also lists the V4003A/03AN, a Grade 1 wide stile rim device supplied with night latch trim rather than exit only.
23) The 8300 needs electric latch retraction. Are there devices that come electrified as standard instead?
The 8300 can be ordered with an ES electric latch retraction option. If a factory electrified device suits the job better, the SDC S6136 Spectra is a 36 inch electrified architectural rim exit device with a 4 inch wide stile, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Sargent's 12-8810-LTRIM is a fire rated wide stile rim device supplied with request to exit and motorized electric latch retraction. Securitron's EMB is an electromechanical exit bar built for 2-1/4 inch doors, the upper end of the range the 8300 fits.
24) Is there a crossbar or paddle rim device instead of a pushpad like the 8300?
The 8300 uses a wide stile touchbar pushpad. For a crossbar look, the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a Grade 1 48 inch crossbar rim exit device in a wide stile build, and the CRL Jackson 1095 is a 48 inch crossbar rim panic device, wide stile, exit only. CRL Jackson also lists the 1095P, a paddle operated wide stile rim panic device in exit only. Sargent's 3828 is a standard push bar Grade 1 reversible rim device for 48 inch doors.
25) The 8300 is exit only. Which comparable rim devices accept outside trim as part of the device?
The 8300 ships exit only and Dorma outside trim is ordered separately. Corbin Russwin's ED5200 is a 36 inch Grade 1 wide stile rim device listed as exit only and accepts trim, and the ED4200 is the narrow stile 36 inch Grade 1 device with the same accepts trim function. If the requirement is key retraction of the latch from outside, the Sargent 8504 is a night latch function narrow stile rim device, and the Detex V4003A/03AN is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device supplied with night latch trim.
26) Which rim exit devices besides the DORMA 8300 come with hex key dogging?
The 8300 is supplied with hex key dogging, with cylinder dogging available as a CD option. Design Hardware's 1000R and 2000R, both 33 inch rim devices, are listed with hex key dogging, the 1000R in a heavy duty build and the 2000R in standard duty. The Stanley Security QED200 series is a Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile rim device with hex key dogging. On a labeled opening dogging is not permitted, so the fire rated devices are ordered less dogging.
27) What finishes does the DORMA 8300 exit device come in?
Five: 689 anodized aluminum, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. All five are orderable in either the standard or the hurricane build. DORMA also offers a split finish with a stainless steel touchbar over a powder coated rail if you want the pad to wear differently from the rail on a high traffic opening.
28) Is a crossbar panic device the same thing as the DORMA 8300 touchbar?
Not the same, and it matters if you are matching existing openings. The 8300 uses a pushpad touchbar that runs the length of the rail. A crossbar device uses a horizontal round bar standing off the door, which is a different look and a different feel to operate. If you are replacing crossbar hardware and want to keep the building consistent, the CRL Jackson 1095 Series 48 inch and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 48 inch are crossbar rim devices; mixing the two styles across a building tends to bother the people using the doors.
