Dorma 8300/F8300 Grade 1 Rim Exit Device, Wide Stile Pushpad, Non-Handed

The 8000 Series exit devices with deadlocking latch bolts minimize forced entry while offering a low-cost solution to security and life safety requirements. The touchbar, rail assembly and integral parts are constructed of solid steel. Devices are available for labeled and non-labeled openings.

For paired doors where a full-width opening is only occasionally required, removable mullions are used. Doors are fitted with rim exit devices and normally function as single doors. Steel and aluminum mullions are available in 8' or 10' lengths.

Available Finishes

The devices are offered in an array of standard architectural finishes. A split finish with a stainless steel touchbar and powder coated rail is also available.

Economical and reliable exit device

Rim, surface vertical rod, and surface vertical rod ''less bottom rod,'' along with a full range of trim options which allow access from the secure side of an opening, make the 8000 Series the perfect choice when an economical and reliable exit device is required.

Dormakaba F8300B 689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the DORMA F8300 rim exit device work on a fire rated door?
Yes. The F prefix is the fire rated build of the 8300, carrying a 3 hour fire rating, and the deadlocking latch bolt is what makes it acceptable on a labeled opening. One thing to keep in mind on fire doors: dogging is not permitted, so the latch has to stay live at all times. The standard 8300 without the F prefix covers non-labeled openings.
2) What door thickness does the DORMA 8300 rim device fit?
It covers 1-3/4 inch up to 2-1/4 inch doors, so it handles both standard commercial hollow metal and the thicker doors you run into on exterior and storefront applications. Note it is not rated for wood doors.
3) Can this rim exit device be used on a pair of doors?
Yes, with a removable mullion. Rim devices latch into a strike on the frame or mullion, so on a pair you fit both leaves with rim devices and add a removable steel or aluminum mullion, available in 8 foot or 10 foot lengths. The doors then work as singles day to day, and the mullion comes out when you need the full clear opening. On a fire rated pair the mullion has to be a fire rated one.
4) Does the DORMA 8300 come with outside trim or a lever?
No. It ships as an exit only device, meaning push to exit from the inside with no outside operation. If you need access from the secure side, DORMA outside trim is ordered separately, and the 8000 Series offers a full range of trim options.
5) Do I have to pick a strike when ordering the DORMA 8300 rim device?
Yes, strike selection is required. The 416 strike is the standard, and the ordering choices are the 463 standard rim strike, the 430 rim box strike, the 320 overlap strike, and the 486 roller strike. Pick based on your frame condition: the box strike for hollow metal frames, the overlap strike where the door overlaps the frame face, and the roller strike where you want a lower closing force.
6) What dogging options are there on the DORMA 8300, and can I hold the latch retracted during business hours?
The 8300 comes with hex key dogging as standard, which lets you hold the pushpad down and the latch retracted so the door pushes free during open hours. Cylinder dogging is available as the CD option (supplied with a cylinder, SC keyway, keyed different to a random combination) if you want key control rather than an allen wrench, and LD orders it less dogging. On the fire rated F8300 there is no dogging, by code.
7) What should I use instead of the DORMA F8300 on a pair of doors where I cannot use a mullion?
The F8300 is a rim device, which on a pair needs a removable mullion between the leaves. Where a mullion is not acceptable, a vertical rod device latches into the frame head and floor instead. The Hager 4501 Series 36 inch is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod exit device with a wide stile pushpad, and the Hager 4601 Series 36 inch is the narrow stile concealed vertical rod version, also Grade 1. Neither carries a fire rating, so for a labeled pair you would stay with a rim device and mullion.
8) Is an SDC pressure sense bar or switch bar a substitute for the DORMA F8300?
No, they do different jobs. The F8300 is a mechanical Grade 1 rim exit device with a deadlocking latch bolt that latches into a strike. The SDC MSB550 Series 36 inch is a mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock, and the SDC SureExit PSB560 Series 36 inch is a pressure sense bar with tri-failsafe technology - both are release devices for a maglock opening and neither provides mechanical latching. Neither is fire rated. If you want an electrified version of a true latching rim device, the F8300 can be ordered with ES electric latch retraction, or the SDC S6136 Spectra is an electrified architectural rim exit device with a 4 inch wide stile for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors.
9) Is the DORMA F8300 handed, and do I need to specify left or right?
Non-handed. One device covers both left and right hand openings, so you can stock a single part across a building instead of splitting your order by hand.
10) What size door does the 36 inch DORMA 8300 cover, and what if my door is wider or narrower?
The 36 inch unit is size B and suits a standard 3 foot leaf. The series also runs size C at 30 inches for narrower leaves and size A at 48 inches for wide doors. Match the device size to the door width; an undersized bar leaves you short of the code-required push area.
11) Can I get the DORMA 8300 with electric latch retraction for access control?
Yes. The ES option adds electric latch retraction, which lets a card reader or time clock pull the latch back so the door can be pushed or pulled free without dogging. That is the route to take on a fire rated F8300, since mechanical dogging is not an option there. Other order-time options include TX security screws, SNB sex nuts, HC hurricane (includes SNB), and BF barrier free.
12) Is the DORMA 8300 heavy duty enough for a school or high traffic exit?
It is a Grade 1 commercial device with a solid steel touchbar, rail assembly and internal parts, which is the top ANSI/BHMA durability class for exit hardware. End caps are ABS thermoplastic. For very high abuse exits, extra heavy duty wide stile options exist, such as the Detex 10 Advantex Series in 36 inch.
13) I have a Von Duprin 22 on the door now. Is the DORMA 8300 a like for like swap?
Both are 36 inch non-handed wide stile pushpad Grade 1 rim devices, so they are the same type of device on the same kind of opening. The difference that matters is thickness range and rating: the Von Duprin 22 is listed for 1-3/4 inch doors and is not fire rated, while the DORMA F8300 covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch and is fire rated. Expect to re-drill; door prep is not interchangeable between brands, and you will need to confirm the new strike suits your frame.
14) Should I use a rim device like the DORMA 8300 or a vertical rod device?
A rim device latches into a strike on the frame or mullion and is the simplest and cheapest to install, which is why it is the default on single doors and on pairs fitted with a removable mullion. Go to a surface vertical rod when you need a pair of doors to work as a full clear opening with no mullion in the way. The 8000 Series covers both, including surface vertical rod less bottom rod for dirty or wet floor conditions where a bottom latch would jam.
15) The door is 48 inches wide - is the DORMA F8300 the right size?
No. The F8300 covered here is the 36 inch size, and the 8000 Series sizes run C = 30 inch, B = 36 inch and A = 48 inch, so a 48 inch leaf takes the A size. If you are cross-shopping 48 inch devices, the Marks USA M9900F-48 is a fire-rated 48 inch rim panic device in exit only function. Non-labeled 48 inch options include the Corbin Russwin ED3200 Grade 1 crossbar rim device and the Sargent 2828 and 3828, both Grade 1 reversible wide stile rim devices for 48 inch doors.
16) For a high-abuse opening like a school or stadium, is there a heavier device than the DORMA F8300?
The F8300 is Grade 1 with a solid steel touchbar and rail and a deadlocking latch bolt. If the opening takes extreme abuse, the Detex 10 Advantex Series 36 inch is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device rated extra heavy duty, and the Detex 40 Advantex is the extra heavy duty narrow stile version. Neither Detex carries a fire rating, so on a labeled opening the F8300 remains the one that holds the 3 hour label.
17) What finishes does the DORMA F8300 come in, and can I match existing hardware across a building?
Five finishes: 689 anodized aluminum, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. A split finish with a stainless steel touchbar over a powder coated rail is also offered, which is a common way to match a storefront rail color while keeping a stainless push surface.
