Dorma 8300/F8300 Grade 1 Rim Exit Device, Wide Stile Pushpad, Non-Handed

The 8000 Series exit devices with deadlocking latch bolts minimize forced entry while offering a low-cost solution to security and life safety requirements. The touchbar, rail assembly and integral parts are constructed of solid steel. Devices are available for labeled and non-labeled openings.

For paired doors where a full-width opening is only occasionally required, removable mullions are used. Doors are fitted with rim exit devices and normally function as single doors. Steel and aluminum mullions are available in 8' or 10' lengths.

Available Finishes

The devices are offered in an array of standard architectural finishes. A split finish with a stainless steel touchbar and powder coated rail is also available.

Economical and reliable exit device

Rim, surface vertical rod, and surface vertical rod ''less bottom rod,'' along with a full range of trim options which allow access from the secure side of an opening, make the 8000 Series the perfect choice when an economical and reliable exit device is required.

    • Exit Only (Dorma outside exit device trim sold separately)

Dormakaba F8300A 689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the DORMA F8300 rim exit device fit a 48 inch wide door?
Yes. The F8300 covered here is the Size A device, sized for 48 inch doors. DORMA sizes the 8000 Series rail as C for 30 inch, B for 36 inch, and A for 48 inch, so on a 36 inch leaf you want the Size B instead of this one.
2) What door thickness does the DORMA 8000 Series rim device work on?
It mounts on standard commercial doors from 1-3/4 inches up to 2-1/4 inches thick. That upper end covers thicker hollow metal and insulated exterior leaves that many rim devices top out below.
3) Which strike should I order with the DORMA 8300 rim exit device?
Four choices, and the frame decides it. The 463 standard rim strike is the default for a typical hollow metal frame. The 430 rim box strike suits openings where you want a full boxed keeper. The 320 overlap strike handles frames where the stop or a tight jamb condition forces the latch to sit over the frame face. The 486 roller strike reduces latch friction on doors that need an easy close. A strike must be selected, the device does not default to one.
4) Does the DORMA 8300 come with outside trim or a lever?
No. It ships exit only, with no outside trim. If you need access from the secure side, DORMA outside exit device trim is ordered separately from the full trim range offered for the 8000 Series.
5) Can I hold the latch retracted on the DORMA 8300 during business hours?
Standard 8000 Series devices use hex key dogging, which lets you depress the touchbar and hold it with an Allen wrench for a push-pull opening. You can also order CD cylinder dogging with an SC keyway cylinder keyed different, or LD to delete dogging entirely. Bear in mind the F8300 is the fire rated version, and fire rated openings cannot be dogged, so mechanical dogging belongs on the non-labeled 8300.
6) How do I secure a pair of doors with rim exit devices and still get a full clear opening?
Rim devices latch into the frame, so a pair needs something at the center. DORMA answers that with a removable mullion in steel or aluminum, 8 foot or 10 foot lengths: each leaf gets its own rim device and the doors work as singles day to day, then the mullion pulls out when you need the full width for moving equipment. If you would rather have no mullion at all, the alternative is a surface vertical rod device, which the 8000 Series also offers, including a less bottom rod version.
7) Does the DORMA 8300 need handing when I order it?
No handing to specify. The 8300 wide stile pushpad rim device is non-handed, so one device covers left or right hand openings. What you do have to pick is a strike, plus finish and any dogging or electrified option.
8) Can the DORMA 8300 be tied into an access control system?
Yes, with the ES electric latch retraction option. That pulls the latch back electrically so a card reader or push button can release the door while the pushbar still gives free egress mechanically. Order it as an option on the device rather than adding it later.
9) What options are available for a high abuse or coastal opening on the DORMA 8000 Series?
Three worth knowing. HC is the hurricane option and includes sex nuts. SNB adds sex nut through bolting on its own (it already comes with the F and H options). TX substitutes security screws for tamper resistance. There is also a BF barrier free version where reduced operating force is needed.
10) Is the DORMA 8300 heavy duty enough for a school or hospital exit?
It is a Grade 1 commercial device with a touchbar, rail assembly and internal parts made of solid steel, plus deadlocking latch bolts that resist latch slipping and forced entry. End caps are ABS thermoplastic. Grade 1 is the top ANSI/BHMA durability tier for exit hardware, which is what institutional specs normally call for.
11) What fire rated rim exit devices come in shorter lengths than the 48 inch F8300?
The F8300 in 48 inch covers a wide leaf; the same 8300 device is built in 30 inch and 36 inch sizes as well. Other fire rated rim devices in shorter lengths include the Marks USA M9900F at 36 inches, the Orca OED85 at 36 inches and the Arrow FS1250 at 32 inches for 1-3/4 inch doors.
12) I need electric latch retraction - is the F8300 or an electrified bar the better choice?
The F8300 can be ordered with the ES electric latch retraction option on the fire rated Grade 1 device. If the requirement is an electrified bar on a non-rated opening instead, the SDC S6136 is a 36 inch electrified architectural rim exit device with a 4 inch wide stile for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar for 2-1/4 inch doors. Those SDC and Securitron units are not fire rated devices.
13) Is a pressure sense bar or switch bar a substitute for the F8300 panic device?
No. The SDC PSB560 SureExit pressure sense bar and the SDC MSB550 mechanical switch bar at 36 inches release an electromagnetic lock and are not fire rated; they do not latch a door the way a rim exit device does. The F8300 is a rim device with a deadlocking latch bolt on a fire rated opening, so a switch bar is not an exchange for it.
14) What crossbar rim device can I use if a touchbar pushpad is not wanted?
The F8300 uses a wide stile touchbar pushpad. For a crossbar look on a non-rated opening, the CRL Jackson 1095 Series is a 48 inch crossbar rim panic device, wide stile exit only, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a Grade 1 48 inch crossbar rim device. CRL also offers the 1095P paddle version and the 1295 push pad device for 1-3/4 inch doors.
15) Does the Sargent 8800 fire rated device do the same job as the DORMA F8300?
Not as configured. The Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is a fire rated Grade 1 wide stile rim device but its function is dummy, with RX and motorized electric latch retraction and L trim. The F8300 is a working panic rim device, exit only, with a deadlocking latch bolt and hex key dogging. If a live latching device is needed on the labeled opening, the F8300 is the one that latches.
16) What finishes does the DORMA F8300 rim device come in?
Five: 689 anodized aluminum, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. For a property standardizing across a building, 689 and 695 are the usual matches to aluminum storefront and bronze entrances. DORMA also offers a split finish with a stainless touchbar over a powder coated rail.
17) What extra heavy duty rim device would stand up better than a standard Grade 1 on a high abuse opening?
The Detex Advantex 10 Series at 36 inches is a wide stile Grade 1 rim exit device rated extra heavy duty, and the Detex 40 Advantex is the narrow stile extra heavy duty equivalent, also Grade 1. The Detex V4003A/03AN is a wide stile Grade 1 device supplied with night latch trim. The F8300 is a Grade 1 commercial device with solid steel touchbar, rail assembly and integral parts, and is the fire rated option of the group.
