Dorma 8300/F8300 Grade 1 Rim Exit Device, Wide Stile Pushpad, Non-Handed

The 8000 Series exit devices with deadlocking latch bolts minimize forced entry while offering a low-cost solution to security and life safety requirements. The touchbar, rail assembly and integral parts are constructed of solid steel. Devices are available for labeled and non-labeled openings.

For paired doors where a full-width opening is only occasionally required, removable mullions are used. Doors are fitted with rim exit devices and normally function as single doors. Steel and aluminum mullions are available in 8' or 10' lengths.

Available Finishes

The devices are offered in an array of standard architectural finishes. A split finish with a stainless steel touchbar and powder coated rail is also available.

Economical and reliable exit device

Rim, surface vertical rod, and surface vertical rod ''less bottom rod,'' along with a full range of trim options which allow access from the secure side of an opening, make the 8000 Series the perfect choice when an economical and reliable exit device is required.

Dormakaba F8300C 689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the DORMA F8300 rim exit device fit a 30 inch wide door?
Yes. The F8300 in size C is the 30 inch device, sized for a 30 inch door leaf. DORMA also builds the same 8000 Series rim device as size B at 36 inches and size A at 48 inches, so a mixed set of openings can all carry the same hardware and finish.
2) What door thickness does the DORMA 8000 Series rim exit device work on?
It mounts on standard 1-3/4 inch through 2-1/4 inch thick doors. That covers the normal commercial hollow metal leaf at 1-3/4 inches and the heavier 2-1/4 inch leaves you see on some storefront and specialty openings. It is not rated for wood doors, so plan on metal or aluminum.
3) Is the DORMA F8300 fire rated, and what is the difference from the plain 8300?
The F prefix is the fire label. F8300 carries a 3 hour fire rating and is the one to order for a labeled opening. The non-fire 8300 is the same Grade 1 wide stile rim device for openings with no label. Fire rated devices do not dog open, so on a labeled door the pushpad always latches.
4) Can I use this DORMA rim device on a pair of doors without a mullion?
No. A rim device latches into a strike on the frame or mullion, so a pair of doors needs a removable mullion between them. DORMA offers steel and aluminum removable mullions in 8 foot and 10 foot lengths, which lets the pair function as two single doors day to day and still open full width when you pull the mullion. If you cannot have a mullion at all, use a surface vertical rod device instead, which the 8000 Series also offers.
5) Does the DORMA F8300 come with outside trim or a lever?
No, it ships exit only. The pushpad releases the latch from the inside and there is no outside operation. DORMA outside exit device trim is a separate order, and the 8000 Series has a full range of trim options if you need access from the secure side.
6) Which strike do I order with the DORMA 8000 Series rim exit device?
A strike is a required selection, and there are four. The 463 standard rim strike is the usual choice on a typical hollow metal frame. The 430 rim box strike is for a mullion or where you need a boxed housing. The 320 overlap strike suits openings where the frame stop overlaps. The 486 roller strike reduces friction on high traffic doors. Pick from the frame condition you are actually working with.
7) Are exit bars like the SDC MSB550 or PSB560 a substitute for the DORMA F8300?
No. The DORMA F8300 is a mechanical rim exit device with a deadlocking latch bolt that latches into a rim strike on the frame. The SDC MSB550 is a mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock, and the SDC PSB560 is a pressure sense bar. Both are switching bars for mag lock openings rather than latching devices, and neither is fire rated, so neither replaces a fire rated latching device on a labeled opening. The Detex 00 Series is likewise a dummy exit device with no latching function.
8) My doors are 2-1/4 inch thick. Which rim exit devices cover that thickness besides the DORMA 8300?
The DORMA 8300 fits standard doors from 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inches thick. In the same range, the Adams Rite 8800 Series lists 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inches, though it is a non fire rated narrow stile device. Many comparable rim devices, including the Von Duprin 22-3FT, the Corbin Russwin ED5200, and the Arrow ED910, are listed for 1-3/4 inch doors only, so a 2-1/4 inch leaf narrows the field considerably.
9) How does dogging work on the DORMA 8300 exit device?
Standard dogging is hex key, so a maintenance tech holds the pad depressed with an Allen wrench to keep the door push-pull during business hours. If you want key control over that, cylinder dogging (CD) comes with a cylinder in the SC keyway, keyed different to a random combination. Less dogging (LD) is also available, and it is what you want on a labeled fire opening.
10) Can the DORMA 8000 Series rim device be electrified for access control?
Yes. ES electric latch retraction is an available option, which pulls the latch back on a signal so a card reader or push button can release the opening remotely while the pushpad still gives free egress. Order it with the device rather than retrofitting it later.
11) What other options should I specify on a DORMA F8300 for a high abuse or coastal opening?
Several. SNB sex nuts bolt the device through the door for pull resistance and come included with the F and H options. TX security screws deter tampering at the fasteners. HC is the hurricane option and includes SNB. BF is the barrier free version for reduced operating force. Choose these at order time.
12) Do I have to worry about handing when ordering the DORMA 8300 exit device?
No. The 8300 is non-handed, so one device covers left hand and right hand openings. That matters for property managers and MRO buyers keeping spares on the shelf: one part number in one finish covers every door of that size in the building.
13) How does the DORMA 8300 compare to a Von Duprin 22 or a Corbin Russwin ED5200?
All three are Grade 1 wide stile rim devices. The Von Duprin 22-3FT is a 36 inch non-handed pushpad device listed for 1-3/4 inch doors only, and the Corbin Russwin ED5200 is a 36 inch device at 1-3/4 inches that accepts trim. The DORMA covers a wider 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch thickness range and is available at 30 inches, which the other two are not in these configurations. The F8300 is also the fire rated one of the group.
14) Is the DORMA 8000 Series tough enough for a high traffic commercial entrance?
It is built for commercial use and certified Grade 1, the heaviest ANSI/BHMA duty class for exit hardware. The touchbar, rail assembly and internal parts are solid steel, and the end caps are ABS thermoplastic. Deadlocking latch bolts resist forced entry at the strike.
15) The door has a 30 inch leaf. Which rim exit devices come in that size besides the DORMA 8300?
The DORMA 8300 in size C covers a 30 inch device width, with size B at 36 inches and size A at 48 inches. In the same 30 inch width, the Adams Rite 3700 Series is offered at 30 inches as a Grade 1 fire rated narrow stile device, and the Adams Rite 8700 and 8800 Series are both offered at 30 inches in non fire rated Grade 1 narrow stile form. The Arrow 3880 Series is a 30 inch Grade 1 wide stile pushpad rim bar, exit only, though it is not fire rated.
16) What should I use instead of the DORMA F8300 if I need a crossbar instead of a pushpad?
The DORMA F8300 is a pushpad style touchbar device. If the specification calls for a crossbar look, the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a Grade 1 wide stile crossbar rim device at 48 inches, and the CRL Jackson 1095 Series is a 48 inch crossbar rim panic device in exit only function. The Sargent 3828 is a standard push bar wide stile rim device for 48 inch doors. All three are non fire rated, so confirm the opening is unlabeled before substituting.
17) I need electric latch retraction on the exit device. Is there a factory electrified alternative to the F8300?
The DORMA F8300 can be ordered with an ES electric latch retraction option. If you want a purpose built electrified device instead, the SDC S6136 is a 36 inch electrified architectural rim exit device with a 4 inch wide stile for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick, and the Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is a fire rated wide stile rim device supplied with RX and motorized electric latch retraction. The Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar rather than a latching rim device, so it is not a direct swap for a device that throws a deadlocking latch bolt into a rim strike.
18) For a high abuse opening like a school or stadium exit, is there a heavier device than the DORMA 8300?
The DORMA 8300 is Grade 1 with a solid steel touchbar and rail assembly. If you want a step up in duty rating, the Detex 10 Advantex Series at 36 inches is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty wide stile rim device, and the Detex 40 Advantex is the extra heavy duty equivalent in narrow stile. Both are rated extra heavy duty rather than heavy duty, and neither is fire rated, so a labeled opening still needs a fire rated device.
19) What finishes does the DORMA 8300 rim exit device come in?
Five: 689 anodized aluminum, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. For property managers matching a building, 689 and 695 are the ones that usually line up with existing aluminum storefront. A split finish with a stainless touchbar on a powder coated rail is also offered.
