Dorma 8300/F8300 Grade 1 Rim Exit Device, Wide Stile Pushpad, Non-Handed

The 8000 Series exit devices with deadlocking latch bolts minimize forced entry while offering a low-cost solution to security and life safety requirements. The touchbar, rail assembly and integral parts are constructed of solid steel. Devices are available for labeled and non-labeled openings.

For paired doors where a full-width opening is only occasionally required, removable mullions are used. Doors are fitted with rim exit devices and normally function as single doors. Steel and aluminum mullions are available in 8' or 10' lengths.

Available Finishes

The devices are offered in an array of standard architectural finishes. A split finish with a stainless steel touchbar and powder coated rail is also available.

Economical and reliable exit device

Rim, surface vertical rod, and surface vertical rod ''less bottom rod,'' along with a full range of trim options which allow access from the secure side of an opening, make the 8000 Series the perfect choice when an economical and reliable exit device is required.

Dormakaba 8300C 689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the 30 inch DORMA 8300 mean it fits a 30 inch door?
Size C on the 8000 Series is the 30 inch device, and it is the short bar meant for narrower leaves. The family runs Size C = 30 inches, Size B = 36 inches, Size A = 48 inches. Pick the device by the door leaf width, not the frame opening: a 36 inch leaf takes Size B. If you are hardware-scheduling a building with mixed leaf widths, all three sizes are the same 8300 device, so the look and the trim stay consistent across the openings.
2) Can I get outside lever trim with the DORMA 8300, or is it exit only?
As supplied, the 8300 is exit only. It pushes out and there is no outside operation. If you need entry from the secure side, Dorma outside exit device trim is a separate order line, and the 8000 Series carries a full range of trim options for that. For a stairwell or an exterior service door where staff need to get back in, budget for the trim up front.
3) How do I hold a door with a DORMA 8300 unlatched during business hours?
The 8300 ships with hex key dogging as standard, so you depress the pushpad and set it with the supplied hex wrench to keep the latch retracted through the day. If you would rather control that with a key so a tenant or a cleaner cannot dog the door open, order the CD option, which is cylinder dogging supplied with an SC keyway cylinder keyed different to a random combination. LD deletes dogging entirely. Cylinder dogging is the usual pick in multi-tenant and school buildings where you do not want a loose hex key deciding whether the building is secure.
4) Which strike do I order with a DORMA 8300 rim device?
A strike is a required choice on the 8300, and there are four. The 463 standard rim strike is the default for a typical hollow metal frame. The 430 rim box strike is used where the frame face needs a boxed housing. The 320 overlap strike suits an opening where the door overlaps the frame stop. The 486 roller strike reduces the push force to latch and is the usual answer on a door with a closer that is slamming or a door under stack pressure. Match the strike to the frame condition before you order, because the wrong one means the latch never lands.
5) How do I panic-hardware a pair of doors with no mullion using DORMA 8000 Series devices?
Two ways with the 8000 Series. Fit both leaves with 8300 rim devices and a removable mullion between them: the pair works as two single doors day to day, and the mullion drops out when you need the full width for freight or furniture. Dorma offers steel and aluminum mullions in 8 foot and 10 foot lengths. If a mullion is not acceptable at all, the 8000 Series also comes as a surface vertical rod device, which latches at the head and the sill so nothing sits in the clear opening. A rim device on its own cannot secure a pair without something to latch into.
6) Will a wide stile rim exit device work on a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
No. The 8300 is a wide stile pushpad device and it needs the stile width of a hollow metal or heavy aluminum door to mount. A typical glass storefront leaf has a stile too narrow to carry it. For those openings go to a narrow stile rim device instead: the Adams Rite 8800 Series covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors like the 8300 does, and the Adams Rite 3700 Series is the fire-rated narrow stile choice. Corbin Russwin ED4200 and TownSteel ED3700 are other Grade 1 narrow stile rim devices. Getting this wrong is the most common return on exit hardware, so measure the stile before ordering.
7) What is the equivalent of a DORMA 8300 from Von Duprin or another major brand?
The closest like-for-like is the Von Duprin 22 Series, a Grade 1 wide stile pushpad rim device, non-handed, in the 36 inch size. Corbin Russwin ED5200 and ED2200 are Grade 1 wide stile rim devices in 36 inch as well, both exit only. TownSteel ED1100 and ED9700 are Grade 1 heavy duty wide stile rim devices, also 36 inch. Where they part company from the 8300 is door thickness: the Von Duprin 22, the ED5200 and the ED2200 are listed at 1-3/4 inch, while the 8300 goes to 2-1/4 inch. If your leaf is thicker than 1-3/4, that narrows the field fast.
8) Can I put the DORMA 8300 on a wood door?
No. The 8300 is not rated for wood door application. If the opening is a wood leaf, look at the Adams Rite 8700 Series or the fire-rated Adams Rite 3700 Series, both Grade 1 rim devices listed as wood door compatible, though both are narrow stile designs. Confirm the leaf construction before you spec, because mounting exit hardware to an unreinforced wood door is how the device pulls out of the face.
9) The opening needs a fire rated exit device. What rim device should I use instead of a DORMA 8300?
The 8300 as configured is non-fire-rated; the fire label version of the 8000 Series is the F8300, rated 3 hour. If you are open to another brand, fire rated rim devices include the Dexter ED1000 Series Grade 1 fire rated rim device, the Marks USA M9900F in 36 inch and 48 inch exit only, the Orca OED85 Series 36 inch fire rated rim device, the Arrow FS1250 at 32 inches, and the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch fire rated narrow stile rim device, which is the only fire rated peer in a 30 inch size. Note a fire rated opening cannot use dogging, so the hex key dogging on the 8300 has no counterpart on a labeled device.
10) I need electric latch retraction. Is the DORMA 8300 or a dedicated electrified device the better fit?
The 8300 can be ordered with the ES electric latch retraction option, so the mechanical device and the electrified device are the same base 8300. If instead you want a purpose-built electrified rim device, the SDC S6136 is a 36 inch electrified architectural rim exit device with a 4 inch wide stile for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar for 2-1/4 inch doors. The SDC MSB550 is a 36 inch mechanical switch bar with electromagnetic lock release and the SDC PSB560 is a 36 inch pressure sense bar, both listed for narrow or wide stile; those two signal a lock release rather than retracting a rim latch, so they are not a drop-in for a latching rim device.
11) Which rim exit devices look like a substitute for the DORMA 8300 but will not work as one?
Three to watch. The Detex 00 Series Advantex is a dummy exit device in wide stile Grade 1, so it has no latch and provides no security. The Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is a fire rated wide stile rim device in dummy function. The Sargent 8504 is a narrow stile rim device in night latch function, which means outside key access, a different function than the exit only 8300. And the Dexter ED1500-EXTRD-SP is a 12 inch extension rod assembly for ED1500 exit devices, a component rather than a device. The 8300 is a latching exit only rim device with deadlocking latch bolts.
12) My doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inch. Which rim exit devices cover that range?
The 8300 fits standard 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick doors, so it covers the thicker leaf directly. Among peers, the Adams Rite 8800 Series lists the same 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch range, and the SDC S6136 lists 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. Several other rim devices, including the Von Duprin 22 Series, the Corbin Russwin ED5200, and the Falcon 19-R, are listed at 1-3/4 inch only, so verify thickness before substituting one of those onto a thick door.
13) Can the DORMA 8300 be tied into an access control system for remote unlock?
Yes, order it with the ES option, electric latch retraction. That pulls the latch back electrically so a card reader, intercom or building system can release the door and let it be pushed from outside without a mechanical key. This is the option to specify on a main entrance or a loading door on a schedule. It needs power to the door, so it is a hinge and power transfer conversation with the electrician before the frame is set, not after.
14) What options should I add to a DORMA 8300 on an exterior door in a coastal or high-abuse building?
Three worth naming. HC is the hurricane option and it includes sex nuts, which through-bolt the device to the door instead of relying on screws in the door face. SNB orders those sex nuts on their own, and they come included with the F and H options anyway. TX is security screws, which stops the device being unbolted from the push side. On a school, a transit facility or any door the public reaches, TX plus through-bolting is the standard defense against the device being removed. BF, barrier free, is the option to ask about where the opening has to meet an accessibility requirement for operating force.
15) Is the DORMA 8300 strong enough for a high-traffic commercial entrance?
It is a Grade 1 device, the highest ANSI/BHMA durability tier for exit hardware and the one specified for high-use commercial and institutional openings. The touchbar, rail assembly and internal parts are solid steel, and the latch bolt deadlocks to resist being jimmied. End caps are ABS thermoplastic. It is a commercial-rated product, not a light residential bar.
16) Do I have to worry about handing when ordering a DORMA 8300 exit device?
No. The 8300 is non-handed, so one part number covers left hand and right hand openings. That is useful for a property manager or an MRO stockroom keeping spares on the shelf: one 30 inch device fits either swing, and you are not stuck holding a hand you do not need. Handing does still matter for the outside trim if you add it.
17) Should I use a rim exit device or a vertical rod device on my door?
A rim device like the 8300 latches into a strike on the frame at the edge of the door, which makes it the simplest and least maintenance-heavy choice for a single door in a frame. Go to a surface vertical rod when you have a pair of doors and cannot accept a mullion in the opening, because the vertical rod latches top and bottom instead. The 8000 Series also offers surface vertical rod less bottom rod, which deletes the floor latch and the bottom rod, worth doing where the sill gets wet, dirty or swept and a bottom latch would jam. If you have a pair but a mullion is acceptable, two rim devices plus a removable mullion is the cheaper and more durable route.
18) I need a Grade 1 rim exit device but the DORMA 8300 does not fit my door. What else is there?
Depends on why it does not fit. If the door is thicker than 1-3/4 inch and the 8300 is otherwise right, the Adams Rite 8800 Series also covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch, and the SDC S6136 covers 1-3/4 to 2 inch. If you need fire rated rather than the non-rated 8300, the Dexter ED1000 fire rated rim device and the Orca OED85 Series are rated options, or step to the F8300 in the same Dorma family. If the electrified route is what you are after, the SDC S6136 Spectra is an electrified wide stile rim device rather than an add-on option. And if budget rather than fit is the constraint, the Cal-Royal 5000 is a Grade 2 heavy duty wide stile rim device, a step down in durability tier from Grade 1.
19) What is a lower cost alternative to a Grade 1 device like the DORMA 8300 for a low traffic door?
The 8300 carries ANSI Grade 1. If the opening does not require Grade 1, the Cal-Royal 5000 is a 36 inch wide rim exit device with a touch bar and a Grade 2 chassis, and the Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48 inch rim device with a push bar in Grade 2; both are described as heavy duty. The Design Hardware 2000R is a 33 inch standard duty wide stile rim device with hex key dogging, the same dogging method the 8300 uses, and the Hager 4701 Series is a 36 inch standard duty rim device that still carries Grade 1 BHMA certification. Match the grade to what your code official or spec requires before dropping below Grade 1.
20) The DORMA 8300 has a pushpad. What if the job specifies a crossbar exit device instead?
The 8300 uses a touchbar pushpad on a wide stile rail. A crossbar device is a different operating style, not a finish variation, and the trim and strike layout differ. Crossbar rim peers include the Corbin Russwin ED3200, a Grade 1 48 inch wide stile crossbar rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the CRL Jackson 1095 Series 48 inch crossbar rim panic device in wide stile, exit only. Sargent also lists the 3828, a Grade 1 reversible standard push bar rim device for 48 inch doors. All are 48 inch devices, so they suit a wider leaf than the 30 inch 8300.
21) The opening needs vertical rod hardware, not a rim device. What replaces the DORMA 8300?
The 8300 is a rim device, which latches into a strike on the frame or a mullion. Where the opening needs top and bottom latching instead, the Hager 4501 Series is a Grade 1 36 inch concealed vertical rod exit device with a wide stile pushpad, and the Hager 4601 Series is a Grade 1 36 inch concealed vertical rod device in narrow stile. The 8000 Series itself also spans surface vertical rod and surface vertical rod less bottom rod configurations if you want to stay in one series across the building.
22) I want to add outside key access later. Does the DORMA 8300 accept trim like other Grade 1 rim devices?
The 8300 ships exit only, with Dorma outside exit device trim sold separately, and the 8000 Series offers a full range of trim options that allow access from the secure side. Peers that likewise state trim capability include the Corbin Russwin ED5200, a Grade 1 36 inch wide stile device listed as exit only and accepts trim, and the Corbin Russwin ED4200, a Grade 1 36 inch narrow stile device also listed exit only and accepts trim. The Detex V4003A/03AN is a wide stile Grade 1 device offered as device only exit only with night latch trim.
23) Can I standardize a whole building on one wide stile rim device family across 30, 36 and 48 inch doors?
The 8000 Series covers Size C at 30 inches, Size B at 36 inches and Size A at 48 inches, all wide stile pushpad and non-handed, so one series and one finish can run the building. If you are comparing families, most wide stile peers appear in a single size: the BEST Precision 2101 Series is a 36 inch wide stile rim device, the TownSteel ED9700 is a heavy duty Grade 1 36 inch wide stile device, and the Sargent 2828 is a Grade 1 reversible rim device for a 48 inch minimum door width. The Dexter ED1000 Series does span both a 3FT and a 4FT Grade 1 rim device.
24) Is a paddle style exit device an equivalent swap for the DORMA 8300 pushpad?
No. The 8300 uses a full width touchbar pushpad on a wide stile rail, non-handed. The CRL Jackson 1095P Series is a paddle rim panic exit device in wide stile, exit only, a different actuator with a different mounting footprint on the door face. The CRL Jackson 1295 Series is the closer match in actuator style, a non-handed push pad rim panic device in wide stile, exit only, for 1-3/4 inch doors.
25) What finishes does the DORMA 8300 come in, and can I match the other exit doors in my building?
Five finishes: 689 anodized aluminum, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze and 696 satin brass. Those are the standard architectural numbers, so 689 matches clear anodized aluminum storefront and 695 matches dark bronze storefront, which is how most buildings are already finished. A split finish with a stainless steel touchbar and a powder coated rail is also offered if you want the bar to stay bright where hands hit it while the rail matches the door.
