The 9000 Series heavy-duty exit device provides superior durability while the smooth reduced projection touchbar assembly minimizes catch hazards.

For paired doors where a full-width opening is only occasionally required, removable mullions are used. Doors are fitted with rim exit devices and normally function as single doors. Steel and aluminum mullions are available in 8' or 10' lengths.

Motorized Latch Retraction

1) Will the DORMA F9300 rim exit device work on a fire rated door opening?
That's what the F9300 is built for. It's the fire rated version of the DORMA 9300 rim device, Grade 1, and it ships with sex nuts (SNB) as standard on fire rated builds so it through-bolts the door instead of relying on screws alone. One thing to plan around: there is no dogging on the fire rated models. Hex key dogging is standard only on the panic (non-fire) versions. A fire door has to latch every time it closes, so if you were counting on holding the latch retracted during the day, that has to be done with the motorized latch retraction option instead.
2) Is the DORMA 9300 wide stile device right for an aluminum storefront door?
Usually not. The 9300 is a wide stile device, which needs the broad stile you get on hollow metal and heavy commercial doors. Narrow stile aluminum storefront doors don't give you the face width. For those openings the narrow stile rim devices are the right family: the Adams Rite 8800 Series covers the same 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch thickness range in a narrow stile, and the Corbin Russwin ED4200 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device. If you need narrow stile AND fire rated, the Adams Rite 3700 Series is the one.
3) How do I secure a pair of doors with the DORMA 9300 rim device and still get a full width opening sometimes?
Use removable mullions. A rim device latches into a strike on the frame, so on a pair you put a 9300 on each leaf and a removable mullion between them. Day to day the doors work as two singles; when you need the full clear opening for equipment or furniture, the mullion comes out. DORMA offers steel and aluminum mullions in 8 foot and 10 foot lengths, so match the mullion to your frame height. If you can never have a mullion in the opening, a rim device is the wrong choice and you want vertical rod hardware instead.
4) Can you get outside lever trim on the DORMA F9300, or is it exit only?
This build is exit only. There's no outside trim on it, so the door pushes open from the inside and there is no key or lever entry from the outside face. If people need to get back in through that door, you need a version that accepts trim, or a separate entry point. The 9000 Series does offer free wheeling lever trim in a range of architectural finishes on trim-accepting models.
5) I want motorized latch retraction for access control. Are there other exit bars that do the electrified job?
The DORMA 9300 offers motorized latch retraction, which retracts the latch with a quiet motor and can electrically hold the push bar retracted during non secure hours. Other electrified bars in the same family of openings work differently: the Sargent 12-8810 is a fire rated Grade 1 wide stile rim device with RX and motor electric latch retraction, the SDC S6136 Spectra is a 36 inch electrified architectural rim exit device on a 4 inch wide stile, and the SDC PSB560 SureExit is a 36 inch pressure sense bar with tri-failsafe technology for narrow or wide stile. The SDC MSB550 is a 36 inch mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock rather than throwing a latch, so it is not a latching rim device.
6) Does the DORMA 9300 fire rated device dog open, and what do I order if I need a dogged device?
Hex key dogging is standard on the panic models, and fire rated models have no dogging, which is normal for a fire door. If the opening does not need a fire rating and you want a device that holds dogged, the Design Hardware 1000R is a 33 inch heavy duty rim device with hex key dogging and the Design Hardware 2000R is a 33 inch standard duty wide stile rim device with hex key dogging. The Stanley QED200 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile rim device with hex key dogging.
7) What looks like a substitute for a DORMA 9300 rim device but is not?
Three things in the same aisle are not rim exit devices you can swap in. The Hager 4501 and 4601 at 36 inches are concealed vertical rod devices, not rim devices, so they need vertical rod prep and a top and bottom latch rather than a rim strike. The Detex Advantex 00 Series wide stile unit is a dummy exit device with no latching function at all. The Sargent 8504 is a night latch function narrow stile device, which is a different function than the 9300 exit only configuration.
8) The DORMA 9300 fits 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors. Which comparable devices cover the same thickness range?
The Adams Rite 8800 Series 30 inch narrow stile rim device lists the same 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range. The Securitron EMB electromechanical exit bar lists 2-1/4 inch. Several others are built for 1-3/4 inch only, including the Von Duprin 22 Series 36 inch, the Corbin Russwin ED5200, and the Falcon 19-R 36 inch narrow stile, so on a door thicker than 1-3/4 inch those are not a straight swap.
9) Does the DORMA F9300 come with a strike, or do I order that separately?
The 463 strike is standard with the device, so the rim strike that catches the latch comes in the box. Fasteners are covered too: wood and machine screws ship standard, and on the fire rated build you also get sex nuts for through-bolting.
10) Do I need to specify left hand or right hand for the DORMA 9300 exit device?
No handing to specify. The 9300 rim device is non-handed, so the same part goes on a left or right hand door. That's what you want when you're stocking spares for a building with openings swinging both ways.

The Von Duprin 22 is Grade 1 wide stile, non-handed, 36 inch, but it's a 1-3/4 inch only device and not fire rated. The Corbin Russwin ED5200 is Grade 1 wide stile at 1-3/4 inches, exit only or accepts trim, not fire rated. So if the opening is a labeled fire door, the 9300 is the one of the three that goes on it. If it isn't, all three are candidates and the thicker door range is the 9300's edge.
13) Can the DORMA 9300 be tied into a card reader so the door unlocks electrically?
Yes, through motorized latch retraction. MLR uses a motor to draw the touchbar in and retract the latch, and it can be triggered by a range of credentials. It'll also hold the pushbar retracted electrically during open hours, which is how you get free ingress on a fire rated door that can't be mechanically dogged. DORMA notes the motor runs quietly, which matters if the device sits over a reception desk or classroom.
14) My spec calls for a crossbar rim device rather than a touchbar. What are my options?
The DORMA 9300 uses a reduced projection touchbar assembly. If the drawing calls for a crossbar, the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a Grade 1 48 inch wide stile crossbar rim exit device, and the CRL Jackson 1095 Series at 48 inches is a crossbar rim panic exit device in a wide stile exit only configuration. Both are crossbar rather than touchbar and neither carries a fire rating.
15) I am standardizing a school on one heavy duty wide stile rim device. What else is in that class besides the DORMA 9000 Series?
The DORMA 9000 Series is a heavy duty Grade 1 wide stile rim device built for schools, universities and other institutional buildings. In the same duty class, the Detex 10 Advantex Series at 36 inches is an extra heavy duty Grade 1 wide stile rim device, the Detex V4003A is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device, the TownSteel ED9700 at 36 inches is a heavy duty Grade 1 wide stile rim device, and the Corbin Russwin ED5200 at 36 inches is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device that accepts trim as well as running exit only.
