Pamex FLFP01 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Pamex FLF Alto privacy lever fit a 1-3/8 inch interior door?
Yes. The FLF Alto lever fits doors from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches as standard, which covers both the common older interior thickness and standard 1-3/4 inch doors. For thicker doors, an extension kit covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inches.
2) What door prep does the Pamex Alto lever need, and will it drop into an existing bored door?
It uses the standard residential bore pattern: 2-1/8 inch cross bore with a 1 inch edge bore, and a 2-3/8 inch backset latch. If your door was previously fitted with a standard residential knob or lever at 2-3/8 inch backset, it drops straight in with no new boring.
3) How does the privacy function on the Pamex Alto lever unlock in an emergency?
The inside turn-piece locks and unlocks both levers. From the outside, the lever can be released with a coin or a screwdriver, so a bathroom or bedroom door can be opened from the corridor side without a key.
4) Is the Pamex FLF rated for a commercial building or apartment corridor?
It is ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Grade 3 and catalogued as residential duty, so it suits apartments, houses and light-traffic interior doors. For a commercial corridor or a high-cycle opening, step up to a Grade 2 or Grade 1 privacy lock such as the Hager 2540 (Grade 2) or the Arrow MK02-TA privacy lock.
5) Will the Pamex Alto latch work with the strike plate already in my frame?
The lock ships with a 2-1/4 x 1-3/4 inch round corner full lip strike and the bolt has a 1/2 inch throw. If your frame already has a round corner full lip strike of that size mortised in, the new latch lines up with it. Square corner and other strike options exist if your frame prep is different.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the Pamex FLF Alto privacy lever from another brand?
The Kwikset 300BRNL RDT Breton privacy lever is the nearest match. Like the Pamex FLF Alto, it is a Grade 3 privacy/bed/bath leverset that fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. Both are residential-duty lever sets for bedroom and bathroom doors, so the substitution is mainly a question of lever styling and finish rather than door prep.
7) My doors are 2 inches thick - what privacy or entry lever works where the Pamex FLF Alto does not?
The Pamex FLF Alto is built for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors as standard. For thicker leaves, the Arrow MK02-TA privacy/bed/bath lock covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch and carries a fire rating, and the Hager 2540 privacy lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Note the Arrow MK02-TA uses a Tudor knob rather than a lever.
8) Do I have to order a left or right hand version of the Pamex FLF lever?
No handing to specify. The FLF Alto lever is non-handed, so one part works on either swing. That is a difference from something like the Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy, which is sold as separate left hand and right hand items.
9) Does the Pamex Alto privacy lever come with a deadlatch?
On the privacy set the interior latch is a 2-3/8 inch plainlatch, which is correct for an inside door that does not need to resist carding. The deadlatch at 2-3/8 inch is the exterior latch used on the keyed entry versions of the FLF.
10) Can I key the Pamex Alto lever to my existing Kwikset or Schlage keys?
The privacy function is non-keyed, so there is nothing to key on a bath or bedroom door. Where you need a keyed door in the same Alto trim, the keyed versions use a 5-pin solid brass cylinder in KW keyway as standard, with 5-pin Schlage C keyway available.
11) What is the Pamex Alto lever made of, and will it hold up in a rental unit?
The lever is zinc die-cast, which is typical for Grade 3 residential trim and fine for apartment bedroom and bath doors. For units that get hard use or turnover abuse, a solid brass forged body lock like the Cal-Royal AUS00 (also Grade 3) or a Grade 2 lever is the tougher choice.
12) Can I match the Alto privacy lever with passage and entry levers on the same job?
Yes. The FLF Alto trim is offered in entry (key outside, turn-piece inside), privacy, passage (both levers always free) and half dummy for pull-only doors, so you can run the same lever design across bedrooms, closets, bathrooms and the entry door.
13) What is a comparable Grade 3 privacy lever if the Pamex Alto style doesn't suit?
The Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy lever set is another Grade 3 privacy lever with the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. For a Grade 3 lever in a different look on entry doors, Callan offers the Artino and Bennett series.
14) The door doesn't need to lock - what takes the place of the Pamex FLF Alto privacy lever on a hall or closet door?
Use a passage leverset instead. In the same Grade 3 residential class, the Kwikset 200BRNL RDT Breton passage lever covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Callan Asheville is a Grade 3 passage leverset. Both leave the levers always free, where the Pamex FLF Alto privacy function locks both levers from an inside turn-piece with the outside lever released by coin or screwdriver.
15) Can I use a Baldwin Estate 5103 privacy lever in place of the Pamex FLF Alto?
Both are privacy levers, so the function matches, but they are different products in build and trim. The Baldwin Estate 5103 privacy lever is supplied with the 5048 rose, while the Pamex FLF Alto is a zinc die-cast lever on a round rose offered in bright chrome, matte black and satin nickel. Confirm the rose diameter and backset against the existing prep before swapping either way.
16) I need the same Grade 3 lever family as the Pamex FLF Alto but keyed for an exterior door - what do I order?
For a keyed opening in the same grade class, the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body fitting 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset. The Pamex FLF Alto in privacy function is non-keyed and unlocks from an inside turn-piece, so it is not intended for an exterior entry.
17) Is there a fire-rated alternative to the Pamex FLF Alto lever?
For openings where a fire rating is called out on the drawing, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 passage cylindrical lock that is fire rated and fits 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal-resistant passage lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Both are passage rather than privacy, so a bathroom or bedroom needing a lock will need a different function selection.
